This is a 15.2V, 3950mAh (60.04Wh) lithium-polymer battery for the Gateway P34W v5 and P34W v4 laptops. It fits directly into the internal bay on both revisions of this ultrabook-class notebook. Voltage, connector, and BMS handshake match the original cell specification.

  • P34W v4 and v5 compatibility: Both revisions share the same 15.2V four-cell Li-Polymer architecture, battery bay dimensions, and connector pinout. The BMS on each uses the same charge termination logic, so one cell covers both generations without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge-discharge cycles on a P34W platform. The BMS accepted charge handshake immediately, reached full termination voltage without tripping protection, and reported capacity correctly after two calibration cycles.
  • Post-install calibration on the P34W: After fitting this cell, run a full discharge until the laptop hibernates, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without using the machine. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on this platform.

The P34W BIOS stores learned capacity data from the previous cell in firmware. When a new cell arrives with different EEPROM values, the BIOS flags a health mismatch immediately — even if the new cell is fully functional. This is not a fault with the replacement. Run one complete discharge-to-hibernate cycle followed by a full uninterrupted charge. After two to three cycles, the BIOS battery learn routine overwrites the old data and the health warning clears.

This is a fuel gauge IC calibration issue, not a cell defect. The fuel gauge IC on this platform maps voltage curves from the old cell — when it reads the new cell's voltage, it miscalculates remaining capacity and triggers shutdown early. The fix is deliberate: discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, then charge to 100% twice without interrupting. After calibration, the gauge tracks the new cell's actual voltage curve and shutdown moves back to the correct low-voltage threshold near 3.0V per cell.

My Gateway P34W v5 shows the new battery as "0% available (plugged in, not charging)" — what's happening?

The BIOS did not complete its handshake with the new cell's EEPROM data on first boot. Shut the laptop down completely — not restart — unplug the AC adapter, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect power and boot again. This forces the charge controller to re-initialise the BMS connection. If the gauge still reads 0%, perform a full discharge to hibernate then charge uninterrupted to 100% to trigger the battery learn cycle.

Windows is showing the new cell as 45Wh but the battery is rated 60.04Wh — is it faulty?

No. Windows reads the Wh figure stored in the cell's EEPROM, which reflects the factory-rated value of the previous cell saved in the system's battery data. The actual electrochemical capacity of the new cell is 60.04Wh, but the OS fuel gauge IC won't display this correctly until it runs calibration cycles against the new cell's real voltage curve. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles — after that, the reported Wh figure will align with the cell's actual rated capacity.

The battery charges fine but the P34W stops charging at exactly 80% every time — is the cell defective?

This is a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. Gateway's firmware on some P34W units ships with a battery care charge threshold set to 80% — it actively terminates charging at that point regardless of cell condition. Check the Gateway Management Center or the Windows power settings under "Battery" for a charge limit toggle. Disabling the threshold allows the cell to charge to its full 15.2V termination point.
