Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Hart InterCivic Demo eSlate — 12V Alkaline Replacement Battery (JBC 2001-596)
This is a 12V 15000mAh (180Wh) alkaline replacement battery for the Hart InterCivic Demo eSlate direct-recording electronic voting system. It fits the Demo eSlate unit used in election testing, training deployments, and polling operations where primary power is unavailable. Voltage and capacity match the original JBC 2001-596 / OSA295 specification.
- Demo eSlate power rail: The eSlate's touchscreen controller, ballot rendering processor, and internal storage all draw from a single 12V bus. This battery maintains that rail through the full polling session, including peak draws during screen refresh and audio ballot playback.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full eSlate power-up cycles, confirming stable 12V delivery across the BMS handshake and sustained load during simulated voter interaction sequences without voltage sag tripping the low-battery cutoff.
- Pre-deployment activation: Alkaline packs that have sat in storage can show suppressed open-circuit voltage. Install the battery and run the eSlate through its full diagnostics and Logic and Accuracy test cycle before election day — this draws the pack out of surface passivation and gives the device an accurate baseline for its low-battery indicator.
Why the Demo eSlate triggers a low-battery warning shortly after a fresh pack is installed
Alkaline cells develop a passivation layer on the anode surface during storage. This raises internal resistance temporarily, causing the eSlate's voltage-threshold monitor to read a lower effective voltage than the cell's actual state of charge. The false low-battery flag usually clears after the first moderate draw cycle — running the unit through a full diagnostics sequence is enough. If the warning persists past two full cycles, check the battery contacts for oxidation before swapping the pack.
eSlate shuts down unexpectedly during a Logic and Accuracy test session
The L&A test cycle is the heaviest sustained draw the eSlate produces — screen at full brightness, audio output active, and storage writes happening simultaneously. A pack that is partially depleted or has elevated internal resistance from storage may drop below the BMS cutoff threshold under this combined load even if the battery indicator showed adequate charge at rest. Remove the pack, measure open-circuit voltage with a multimeter — a healthy 12V alkaline pack should read above 12.4V at rest. If the reading is below 12V, replace the pack before the test session continues.

Frequently Asked Questions
The eSlate powers on fine but shuts off partway through the Logic and Accuracy test — is this the battery?
Yes, this is a known alkaline discharge behaviour. The L&A test combines screen, audio, and storage writes simultaneously, which produces the highest sustained current draw the eSlate sees. A pack that reads adequate voltage at rest can still drop below the cutoff threshold under that combined load. Measure the pack with a multimeter before the next test session — open-circuit voltage should be above 12.4V.
We stored several Demo eSlate units over the off-season and now the battery indicator jumps erratically between charge levels on reboot — what's causing that?
Alkaline cells that have sat unused for months develop surface passivation, which raises internal resistance and causes the eSlate's voltage-threshold indicator to read inconsistently. The reading usually stabilises after one full diagnostics cycle forces a moderate sustained draw. Run the unit through its built-in diagnostics menu and recheck the indicator — if it still reads erratically after two cycles, measure pack voltage at the terminals; anything below 12V under light load means the pack needs replacement before deployment.
During a training session, the ballot audio cut out mid-playback and the screen dimmed before recovering — is this a battery issue or a device fault?
That symptom points to a momentary voltage dropout, not a device fault. Audio output and screen backlight together create a brief current spike that can exceed what a partially depleted or high-resistance alkaline pack sustains cleanly. The eSlate recovers because the draw drops once audio stops, allowing voltage to climb back above the cutoff. Replace the pack with a fresh one and confirm open-circuit voltage reads at or above 12.6V before the next training session.
