Fits Holux GR-230 and GR-231 GPS receivers with standard Li-ion cell slot.
Voltage 3.7V, capacity 900mAh delivers full power restoration to aging packs losing charge retention.
Connector slides straight into the battery compartment; no adapter or modification needed for either model.
We bench-tested this cell through five charge cycles on the GR-230 platform; BMS accepted handshake cleanly and voltage held stable under continuous positioning mode.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation use — cold start after power interruption takes 5–10 minutes for first fix versus under a minute on warm restarts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Holux GR-230 / GR-231 GPS Receiver — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 3.7V, 900mAh Li-ion cell built to fit the Holux GR-230 and GR-231 portable GPS receivers. Both models share the same battery bay dimensions and voltage rail, so one cell covers either unit. Capacity matches the original spec at 900mAh (3.33Wh).

  • GR-230 and GR-231 compatibility: Both receivers use the same 52.90 × 32.50 × 7.50mm cell with an identical 3.7V nominal rail and matching connector orientation. The BMS in each unit reads the same charge profile, so no handshake issues occur on first boot.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on the GR-230 platform. The onboard BMS accepted the charge curve without fault flags, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • First fix after a battery swap: After fitting a fresh cell, power the unit on outdoors in clear sky view and let it run a full cold start. The GR-230 has no cached almanac data after a full power removal, so the first satellite fix takes 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts drop back under a minute once the almanac rebuilds.

GPS accuracy dropping as the GR-230 battery runs low

At low charge states, the GR-230 reduces RF receiver sensitivity to keep the processor running longer. This shows up as fewer satellites tracked and wider position scatter on the map. The receiver may still display a fix, but the HDOP value climbs and reported accuracy degrades. Keep the cell above the low-battery indicator to hold full receiver sensitivity — once the icon appears, recharge before relying on the position readout for navigation decisions.

GR-230 shutting off without a low-battery warning

The fuel gauge on the GR-230 calibrates against the original cell's discharge curve. A new cell — or an aged one with shifted internal resistance — can hit the hardware voltage cutoff before the on-screen indicator reaches the last bar. The result is an abrupt shutdown with no visible warning. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles after fitting this replacement to let the gauge re-calibrate. After recalibration, the warning should appear at approximately 3.55V, giving you enough time to save position data before shutdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GR-230 lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The GR-230 stores saved routes and waypoints in battery-backed RAM. When the cell drops fully dead — or is removed — that memory loses power and the data clears. Some units also wipe the satellite almanac at the same time. Back up waypoints to a PC via the Holux software before removing the battery; reload them after the new cell is fitted and the unit completes its first cold-start fix.

Why does the GR-230 drain so much faster when I'm actively navigating compared to just leaving it on?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver at full polling rate and keeps the display lit continuously — both together draw significantly more current than standby. The display backlight alone can account for 30–40% of total draw at full brightness. Lower the backlight to the lowest usable level and, if the unit allows it, set a screen timeout for moments when you're not actively checking position. At reduced brightness with the receiver running, the 900mAh cell lasts considerably longer between charges.

The GR-230 took nearly 10 minutes to get a satellite lock after I put in the new battery — is something wrong with the replacement cell?

Nothing is wrong. A full power interruption clears the satellite almanac the unit had stored in memory. Without that almanac, the receiver has to scan the full frequency range to find and identify satellites from scratch — that is a cold start, and 5–10 minutes is the normal duration. Once the unit has acquired a fix and rebuilt its almanac, power it off and back on to confirm warm-start behaviour; the next lock should come in under 60 seconds.
