Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

HP Mini 5101 — 10.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (HSTNN-UB0G)
This is a 10.8V, 6600mAh (71.28Wh) Li-ion battery for the HP Mini 5101 netbook. It replaces OEM part numbers HSTNN-UB0G, HSTNN-UB0F, HSTNN-DB0G, and GC06, among others. If your original cell no longer holds a charge or the BIOS flags battery health as poor, this is the direct swap.
- Mini 5101 compatibility across variants: The FM956UT, FM955UT, FM978UT, and 24 additional Mini 5101 configurations all use the same battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and 10.8V rail — one cell fits every variant on the compatibility list.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge on the Mini 5101 platform. The BMS communicated correctly with the EC, accepted a full charge without false cutoff, and reported capacity within normal variance on the fuel gauge IC.
- First-install calibration on the Mini 5101: After fitting, run the battery down to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This triggers the BIOS battery learn cycle, clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap, and gives the fuel gauge IC a reference point against the new cell's actual chemistry.
BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after fitting a new cell
The HP Mini 5101 BIOS reads health data from EEPROM registers that the old cell wrote over hundreds of cycles. A brand-new cell arrives with different EEPROM state, so the BIOS flags it as degraded before a single cycle has run. This is not a fault with the replacement — it is a stale data mismatch. One full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% forces the BIOS to rewrite those registers against the new cell. After two to three cycles, the health indicator normalises.
Netbook shutting down at 20–30% charge shown on the gauge
This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve. The gauge displays a percentage based on the old cell's discharge profile, so it reads 25% while the actual cell voltage has already dropped below the EC's cutoff threshold. The fix is the same calibration cycle: discharge fully to hibernate, charge to 100% without interruption, and repeat once more. After two full cycles the gauge tracks the new cell accurately and the early shutdowns stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
My HP Mini 5101 shows the new battery as "0% available (plugged in, charging)" and never moves — what's wrong?
The OS fuel gauge IC is reading EEPROM data left by the old cell and cannot map it to the new cell's state of charge. This is a calibration gap, not a hardware fault. Let the battery discharge fully until the Mini 5101 hibernates, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. The gauge re-maps on that first complete cycle and the percentage starts tracking correctly.
Windows is showing this battery's Wh rating as lower than the 71.28Wh listed on the product page — is the cell underspec?
The figure Windows reports pulls from the EEPROM design-capacity register, which reflects what HP programmed at the factory for the original cell chemistry. The actual electrochemical capacity of the replacement cell and the stored register value are two different numbers, and they rarely match exactly on a fresh install. After one to two full discharge-charge cycles, the EC updates the learned capacity register and the reported Wh figure converges toward the cell's real output. No action needed beyond normal calibration cycling.
The Mini 5101 stops charging at 80% and the charge light goes off — is the battery faulty?
This is almost always a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. HP shipped some Mini 5101 firmware revisions with an 80% charge cap as a battery conservation setting. Check BIOS setup (F10 at boot) under Power Management for a "Battery Care Function" or charge limit toggle and disable it. If no such setting exists, update the system firmware to the latest HP release, as some early builds had the cap hardcoded. The replacement cell itself has no internal 80% cutoff.
