Fits IBM ServeRAID M5000, M5015, and System S3250 M3 with OEM part 46M0917.
3.7V, 1500mAh lithium-ion cell preserves write-cache data during unexpected power loss on the controller.
Cylindrical cell seats into the vertical slot with positive terminal facing the connector block upward.
We bench-tested the cell at 3.7V nominal; BMS entered learn mode within two charge cycles.
After installation, run the battery learn cycle from StorCLI or ONTAP management interface — the controller remains in write-through mode until recalibration completes against the new cell capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM ServeRAID M5000 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (46M0917)

This is a 3.7V, 1500mAh Li-ion cache backup battery for IBM ServeRAID M5000 and M5015 RAID controllers, as well as IBM System x3250 M3 and x3630 M3 7377 platforms. It powers the controller's write cache during an unexpected power loss, protecting pending write operations until the system recovers. OEM part numbers covered include 46M0917, 43W4342, 46M0930, 46M0931, 67Y0186, and 81Y4559.

  • M5000 and M5015 controller compatibility: Both controllers share the same cache backup architecture, voltage rail, and BMS handshake protocol. The battery connects via the same physical connector and communicates state-of-charge data to the controller firmware — no hardware modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on an M5015 controller under StorCLI monitoring. The BMS handshake completed cleanly, voltage held at 3.7V nominal, and the controller accepted the cell without firmware flags on the initial connection.
  • Learn cycle requirement after installation: After fitting this battery, trigger a learn cycle from the management interface — StorCLI: /cx bbu start learn, or ONTAP: system controller battery show. The controller stays in write-through mode until the learn cycle completes and recalibrates the backup window estimate against the new cell. This typically takes 24–72 hours under normal load.

RAID controller staying in write-through mode after battery swap

Write-through mode means the controller is not trusting the battery to protect cache during a power event. After a battery swap, the controller does not automatically recalculate the backup window — it waits for a full learn cycle to complete before switching back to write-back mode. Until that cycle runs and passes, write performance stays reduced and the management console reports the battery as unverified. Run StorCLI /cx bbu start learn or the equivalent ONTAP command to kick the cycle off manually rather than waiting for the scheduled trigger.

Management console showing a battery error days after installation

This catches a lot of users off guard — the controller looked fine at boot, then flagged a battery error 48 or 72 hours later. The scheduled battery self-assessment runs on a timed interval set in firmware, not at the moment of installation. If the learn cycle has not completed by the time that assessment fires, the controller logs a failure because the backup window estimate is still blank. Check the learn cycle status first with StorCLI /cx bbu show — if the cycle is still in progress, the error clears once it finishes and the backup window recalculates to at least 72 hours at 3.7V nominal.

Frequently Asked Questions

The controller switched back to write-through mode overnight — the battery was just replaced. What's happening?

The controller recalculates its backup window during the learn cycle, and until that cycle completes it will not commit to write-back mode. The learn cycle does not start automatically on all firmware versions — run `StorCLI /cx bbu start learn` to trigger it manually. The cycle takes 24–72 hours under normal server load. Once it finishes and the backup window clears the firmware threshold, the controller switches back to write-back on its own.

The battery self-test keeps failing in the management console even though the cell is new. Is the battery faulty?

Probably not — a new cell with an incomplete learn cycle will fail a scheduled self-test because the controller has no calibrated backup window to validate against. The self-test measures whether the cell can sustain the required backup window, and that figure is only known after a full learn cycle runs. Let the learn cycle complete first (check progress with `StorCLI /cx bbu show`), then re-run the self-test. If it still fails after a completed cycle, check that cell voltage is reading 3.7V nominal in the output.

The backup window is showing a shorter value than expected — previous battery held longer. Is the capacity wrong?

Backup window estimates recalibrate over two to three learn cycles as the controller maps the actual discharge curve of the new cell. A fresh cell's first cycle often reads conservatively because the BMS has no prior data for that specific cell. Run two full learn cycles back-to-back and recheck the backup window figure in `StorCLI /cx bbu show` — it should converge toward the expected value. If it stays short after three cycles, verify the cell voltage is stable at 3.7V under load.
