Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-31A / IC-51A Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-271 / BP-272Li)
This is a 7.4V, 1880mAh Li-ion battery pack for the Icom IC-31A, IC-31E, IC-51A, and IC-51E hand-held VHF transceivers. It replaces OEM part numbers BP-271 and BP-272Li. The pack slots into the standard Icom battery bay and connects through the same gold contact strip as the original.
- IC-31A, IC-31E, IC-51A, IC-51E compatibility: These four models share the same battery bay geometry, contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol. Icom kept the connector and voltage rail consistent across the A and E variants, so one pack covers both regional versions without any modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through a full charge cycle and PTT transmit loads on the IC-51A. The BMS handled the transmit current spike without tripping, and the charger dock moved through its charge stages correctly from the first insertion.
- First insertion contact cycle: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Icom dock requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before it will begin charging.
IC-31A charger dock fault LED after BP-271 swap
A new BP-271 pack ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell, which sits below the dock's acceptance threshold. Some Icom charger docks interpret this as a fault condition and flash the LED rather than entering charge mode. This is a BMS handshake issue, not a defective pack. Wipe the contacts, reseat the battery, and if the LED persists, remove the pack for 30 seconds before reinserting to force the dock to re-poll the BMS.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new BP-271
The IC-31A and IC-51A use a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage band, not a calculated charge state. A new pack at storage voltage will sit in a lower band and display fewer bars than a fully charged cell. This is not a capacity fault. Run a full charge cycle in the dock until the indicator goes green, then check the bar display again — it will read correctly once the cells are at 8.4V.

Frequently Asked Questions
My IC-51A cuts out completely when I press PTT on a new BP-271 — is the pack faulty?
This is a BMS overcurrent trip triggered by the transmit current spike at PTT press. A new pack at storage voltage has higher internal resistance, and the sudden RF load can push current draw past the BMS protection threshold. Charge the pack fully before using the radio on transmit — a cell at 8.4V handles the PTT spike without tripping. If it still cuts out after a full charge, check that the gold contact strip is seated flush with no debris on the terminals.
The charger dock cycled to green, but after a full shift the radio drops to noticeably weaker TX output — what's happening?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a charging fault. As the cells discharge through a shift with repeated transmissions, the terminal voltage drops, and the IC-31A reduces TX power when voltage falls below its lower operating threshold. It's normal behaviour for a Li-ion pack under real load. To confirm the pack is healthy, check the bar indicator immediately after a charge shows green — if it reads full bars and the sag only appears late in a shift, the pack is working correctly.
The BP-271 sat unused for several months and now the dock won't accept it at all — no charge LEDs, nothing.
Extended storage at low state of charge can push Li-ion cells below the dock's minimum acceptance voltage, causing the charger to see the pack as unresponsive. This is a BMS deep-discharge lockout. Remove the pack from the dock, wait 60 seconds, then reinsert slowly and hold it in contact for 10 seconds before fully seating — this gives the dock time to detect the pack and attempt a recovery pre-charge pulse. If the dock still shows nothing after three attempts, the cells have likely dropped below 2.5V per cell, which is past the BMS recovery threshold.
