Fits Icom IC-M34, IC-M36, and IC-GM1600 series maritime VHF radios replacing OEM part numbers BP-252, BP-241, and BP-224H.
7.2V lithium-ion pack at 950mAh capacity delivers 6.84Wh for sustained VHF transmission without voltage sag during extended marine operations.
Gold contact strip slides straight into the radio's battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab seats flush when fully inserted.
Bench testing shows clean BMS acceptance on first dock cycle with no overcurrent lockout during PTT transmission spikes at rated RF output.
If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-M34 / IC-M36 Series — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-252)

This 7.2V 950mAh Li-ion pack replaces the BP-252, BP-241, and BP-224H batteries across Icom's compact handheld marine VHF lineup. It fits the IC-M34, IC-M36, IC-GM1600, and IC-GM1600E, among others. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec exactly — no adapter or modification needed.

  • IC-M34 / IC-GM1600 platform fit: These models share the same battery bay dimensions, contact layout, and 7.2V BMS handshake. The pack slides into any of them without modification. The BMS communicates charge state to the dock via the same three-contact strip across all listed models.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the IC-M34 charger dock and confirmed BMS acceptance, full charge cycle completion, and stable voltage output under simulated PTT transmit load. The BMS held within spec during the current spike at PTT press.
  • First insertion into the dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Icom dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it begins charging.

IC-M34 charger dock fault LED after BP-252 swap

A new Li-ion pack ships at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, which puts the pack around 7.2–7.4V total. Some Icom dock firmware interprets a fresh pack at storage voltage as a fault condition rather than a charge request. This triggers the red fault LED even though the pack is not defective. Remove the pack, clean the contacts, and reseat — most docks accept the pack on the second or third attempt once the BMS handshake completes cleanly.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new pack

The IC-M34 uses voltage-threshold bar indicators — each bar corresponds to a voltage band, not a percentage reading. A new pack at storage voltage will display fewer bars than a fully charged one, even if the pack is not faulty. Run the pack through a full charge cycle in the dock before reading the bar indicator. After a complete charge, the pack should hold at or above 8.2V open-circuit and display full bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

My IC-M34 cuts out completely the moment I press PTT — new battery, happens instantly. What's going on?

The PTT transmit spike on a VHF handheld can pull over 1A in the first millisecond, and if the pack is at storage voltage out of the box, the BMS may trip its overcurrent threshold and disconnect the cell before transmission begins. This is not a faulty pack — it's the BMS protecting a cell it hasn't yet confirmed is fully charged. Charge the pack to 100% before first use and the BMS will allow the full transmit current through without tripping.

The IC-M34 transmits fine at first but drops to noticeably weaker audio and range after several calls on a fresh charge. Is the battery failing?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. As the cell depletes past roughly 7.0V under load, the radio's TX power stage reduces output to stay within its operating window — this is normal protection behaviour, not a fault. It becomes more pronounced as the pack ages and internal impedance rises. If you see this on a new pack after only a few transmit cycles, run a full discharge-recharge cycle to let the BMS recalibrate its voltage thresholds.

I've had the BP-252 replacement on the dock for over three hours and the charge light never went green — pack just sits there on red. What do I check?

If the cell voltage dropped below approximately 6.0V during storage, the Icom dock's acceptance circuit may not recognise the pack as chargeable and will hold the fault LED rather than begin a charge cycle. Remove the pack, leave it out for two minutes, reinsert, and watch for the LED to cycle. If it still won't accept, check that the dock output voltage is present — the dock itself may have a failed charge IC. Measure the contact pins on the dock; you should see 8.4V DC between positive and negative when no pack is inserted.
