Fits Icom IC-A4, IC-A4C, IC-A4E handheld transceivers; replaces OEM BP-195, BP-196, BP-196H, BP-196R.
9.6V at 1800mAh delivers consistent transmit power and full receiver sensitivity across the VHF aviation band.
Gold-plated battery contacts insert vertically into the radio's lower dock; locking tab seats flush when fully inserted.
We bench tested this Ni-MH cell on an IC-A4E dock; BMS accepted charge without fault indication on first insertion.
If the charger dock shows a fault light after inserting this battery, remove it, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Icom platform needs a clean contact cycle to accept the new pack before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-A4 / IC-F3 Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BP-195)

This 9.6V, 1800mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the BP-195, BP-196, BP-196H, and BP-196R packs. It fits the Icom IC-A4, IC-A4C, IC-A4E, IC-F3, and over 40 additional Icom handheld transceivers. Voltage and cell count match the original specification exactly.

  • IC-A4 and IC-F3 platform compatibility: These models share the same 9.6V eight-cell Ni-MH architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake requirements. A single pack covers both aviation and land-mobile variants without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and transmit-load discharge on an IC-F3 dock. The BMS accepted the handshake on first insertion, and voltage held steady through sustained PTT draw without tripping overcurrent protection.
  • First-insertion contact cycle on Icom docks: If the dock shows a fault LED on first seating, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins. Do not assume the pack is faulty.

Why the IC-A4 cuts out mid-transmission on a fresh BP-195 pack

Ni-MH cells ship at storage voltage — typically 1.0V to 1.1V per cell, which puts an eight-cell pack around 8.0–8.8V. The IC-A4's BMS monitors transmit current; if cell voltage sags below the cutoff threshold during the initial PTT spike, the radio drops transmission. This is not a fault — it is the BMS protecting cells that have not yet been conditioned. Run one full charge cycle before field use and the cutout will not recur.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting new pack

The IC-A4 and IC-F3 use a simple voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage window, not a calibrated capacity reading. A new Ni-MH pack at storage voltage sits in a lower threshold window and will display one or two bars even when fully capable. Charge the pack fully before reading the indicator. After one complete charge cycle, the resting voltage rises above 9.6V and the indicator will reflect the correct charge state.

Frequently Asked Questions

My IC-A4 drops out every time I press PTT on the new battery — is the pack dead?

No. Ni-MH cells ship at storage voltage, and the transmit current spike on PTT can push a low-voltage pack below the BMS cutoff threshold. The radio cuts transmission to protect the cells — not because the pack is faulty. Charge the battery fully before use and run one complete cycle; the cutout will stop after that first charge brings cells above 9.6V resting.

The Icom charger dock blinks a fault LED and never starts charging the new BP-195 — what's wrong?

The Icom dock requires a clean electrical contact to recognise the BMS handshake before accepting a charge cycle. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat it firmly in one smooth motion. If the LED still faults, check that the dock pins are not bent or corroded. Once contact is clean and the pack is seated fully, the dock should begin charging within 30 seconds.

The radio transmits fine but drops to noticeably weaker audio output after an hour of use — is this a cell problem?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. Ni-MH cells show a gradual voltage drop as capacity depletes, and the IC-A4's TX power stage pulls more current during voice peaks. When pack voltage falls toward the lower threshold, the radio reduces output power to stay within operating range. Check the bar indicator after the drop occurs — if it shows one bar, the pack is near depletion, not defective. Recharge and the behaviour will not repeat at the start of the next cycle.
