Fits Icom IC-GM1600, IC-GM1600E, IC-GM1600K maritime VHF radios; replaces OEM BP-234.
9V, 3300mAh lithium cell delivers sustained output for VHF transmission and reception cycles.
Gold contact strip seated vertically into radio battery slot; locking tab clicks when fully inserted.
Tested on IC-GM1600 bench rig; BMS accepted dock charge cycle on first insertion without fault.
On initial dock insertion, if charger blinks fault, remove battery, wipe the gold contacts dry, and reseat firmly—Icom maritime platforms need clean contact engagement before the BMS handshake completes.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-GM1600 Series — 9V Lithium Replacement Battery (BP-234)

This is a 9V, 3300mAh (29.7Wh) lithium replacement battery for the Icom IC-GM1600, IC-GM1600E, and IC-GM1600K maritime VHF radios. The BP-234 is the correct cell format and connector for this GMDSS-capable handheld. Voltage and physical dimensions match the OEM pack exactly: 122.20 × 58.10 × 19.50mm.

  • IC-GM1600 series fit: The IC-GM1600, IC-GM1600E, and IC-GM1600K share the same battery bay geometry, contact rail, and BMS handshake voltage window — all three accept this BP-234 format without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full charge cycles on the IC-GM1600 platform. The BMS accepted the handshake on first dock insertion, held charge acceptance across repeated PTT-heavy transmit loads, and showed no overcurrent trip during sustained RF output.
  • First insertion contact cycle: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The IC-GM1600 charger requires a clean contact surface to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the IC-GM1600 drops to reduced TX power during extended transmissions

Maritime VHF radios transmit at 5W on the high-power setting, which draws a significant current pulse each time PTT is pressed. On a degraded or deeply discharged battery, the internal resistance rises enough to cause a voltage sag under that load. The IC-GM1600's power management circuit detects the sag and steps down TX output to protect the RF stage. A fresh BP-234 at full charge keeps the pack above the 7.5V sag threshold that triggers this cutback.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new BP-234

New lithium cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 7.8–8.0V — not at a full-charge voltage of approximately 8.4V. The IC-GM1600 uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator, so a pack that hasn't completed its first full charge will display one fewer bar than expected. This is not a faulty cell. Run one complete charge cycle in the Icom dock until the LED goes solid green, then reinsert the battery — the indicator will read correctly at that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

The IC-GM1600 cuts out completely mid-transmission on the new BP-234 — what's happening?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a faulty pack. When PTT is held for an extended burst — common during DSC distress calls or channel scans — the transmit current spike can briefly exceed the BMS protection threshold on a cold or newly installed cell. Let the battery warm to ambient temperature and complete one full charge cycle before heavy use. If the cutout persists, check that the gold contact strip is fully seated; a partial connection raises resistance and lowers the trip point.

The charger dock fault LED never clears after inserting the BP-234 — how do I fix it?

A fault LED that stays on usually means the dock cannot confirm cell voltage is above its acceptance floor. New lithium packs at storage voltage can sit just below that floor. Remove the battery, wait 60 seconds, wipe the contacts with a dry cloth, and reseat it. If the LED still doesn't clear, try a different power source for the dock — the IC-GM1600 charger is sensitive to supply voltage drop, and a weak USB adapter or corroded power connector will prevent the charge cycle from starting.

The BP-234 inserted fine but the dock never transitions to full — it stays on charge indefinitely. What's wrong?

If the dock accepts the pack but never shows a full-charge LED, the most common cause is cell impedance mismatch during the topping phase. The IC-GM1600 charger uses a voltage-termination method — it stops when cell voltage reaches the cutoff point — and high cell impedance can cause the voltage to read artificially high before the cell is truly full. Run the pack through one full discharge on the radio, then recharge from flat. This lets the charger calibrate against the cell's actual impedance curve and complete the cycle correctly.
