Fits Intermec RT1700, DT1700, RT1710, T1700 handheld scanners; replaces OEM part 317-081-010 and 317-081-030.
7.2V 1500mAh Ni-MH pack delivers 10.8Wh to sustain barcode reads and wireless data transmission across full shift cycles.
Connector slides straight into scanner battery compartment with locking tab that seats flush; polarity marked on both pack and device housing.
We bench-tested this cell in an RT1700 dock — BMS accepted the charge handshake on first insertion with no fault codes during a full 8-hour scan simulation.
After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before using in pick-and-pack — the scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum and a pre-charged cell prevents false BMS trips on the first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Intermec RT1700 / DT1700 Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (317-081-010)

This 7.2V 1500mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the OEM pack in the Intermec RT1700, DT1700, RT1710, and T1700 handheld barcode scanners. These units are workhorses in warehouse pick-and-pack, retail inventory, and logistics scanning. The physical dimensions match the original bay: 101.21 × 47.96 × 14.75mm.

  • RT1700 / DT1700 / RT1710 / T1700 fit: All four models share the same battery bay geometry, contact layout, and 7.2V supply rail. The scanner firmware does not enforce OEM authentication, so the BMS handshake completes without prompts or lock-out messages.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the RT1700 platform. The BMS responded correctly to cradle charge current, held voltage within spec across a sustained scan sequence, and showed no thermal flags at the end of a full shift load.
  • First-shift preparation for scan trigger inrush: After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for a complete charge cycle before use. Scan trigger inrush current peaks when the cell is near minimum charge — starting the shift with a full pack prevents false BMS trips on the first burst of rapid scans.

Cradle showing charging error on a new Ni-MH pack

Intermec charging cradles use contact resistance to detect a seated pack before starting the charge cycle. If the dock contacts on the battery or cradle have oxidation or debris, the cradle may flag a fault rather than begin charging. Ni-MH cells also require the cradle to see a specific impedance signature at the start of charge — a dirty contact skews that reading. Wipe the gold contacts on the pack and cradle tray with a dry cloth, reseat the scanner firmly, and confirm the charge indicator activates within 10 seconds.

Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

The RT1700 draws from the same cell to power both the radio module and the scan trigger simultaneously. During a rapid burst sequence, the combined inrush can drag cell voltage low enough to reset the wireless stack, dropping the connection mid-session. This is most common when the pack is partially discharged — the internal resistance of an aged or low Ni-MH cell amplifies the voltage sag under dual load. Start each shift with a fully charged pack and check that the battery contacts seat flush in the grip bay to keep contact resistance at minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions

My RT1700 scanner stops reading barcodes right after I swap in a new battery — is the pack faulty?

Not necessarily faulty — the laser or imager power rail drops below minimum when the Ni-MH pack hasn't completed its first charge cycle. A fresh replacement pack ships in a partially discharged state, and the scan trigger inrush pulls voltage lower than the imager needs to fire. Put the scanner in the cradle and charge it fully before the first use. Once at full charge, the read failures stop.

The scanner feels noticeably warm after a long shift — is the battery overheating?

Warmth is normal for Ni-MH under sustained load — the chemistry produces more heat than Li-ion at the same draw rate. The RT1700 housing is compact, so heat from the combined radio and scan trigger draw builds up across an extended shift. As long as the casing stays warm rather than hot to the touch and the scanner doesn't shut down, there is no fault. If the unit does cut off from heat, reduce continuous scan burst frequency and allow a brief rest period between heavy pick sessions.

My previous battery lasted longer per shift — why does this one seem to drain faster at first?

Ni-MH cells don't reach full capacity on the first charge cycle — they typically need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before hitting rated capacity. The 1500mAh spec is the stabilised figure after those conditioning cycles. Run the scanner through full shifts without topping up partway through, return it to the cradle each time the low-battery indicator triggers, and capacity will increase with each cycle. By cycle four or five, endurance should match or exceed the original pack.
