Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Intermec SF51 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (318-025-001)

This 3.7V, 2600mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Intermec SF51 handheld barcode scanner. It fits the SF51 used across retail, warehouse, and field data collection environments. OEM part numbers 317-018-002, 317-018002A, 1016AB01, and 318-024-002 all cross to this pack.

  • SF51 platform fit: The SF51 uses a single-cell 3.7V Li-ion configuration with a specific BMS handshake through the dock connector. This pack matches that communication protocol, so the scanner's charge indicator and battery status readout behave the same as with the original.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the SF51 cradle and confirmed the BMS accepts the charge signal without throwing a fault. Scan trigger inrush and wireless radio draw both registered within normal operating range across the full state-of-charge window.
  • First-shift preparation for pick-and-pack use: Place the scanner in its cradle for a complete charge cycle before putting it into rotation. Scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum — a fully charged pack prevents false BMS trips during the first burst of the shift.

Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack

A new Li-ion cell ships at partial charge — typically 40–60% — and some SF51 docks flag this as a fault if contact resistance is also elevated. Wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and the cradle with a dry cloth before reseating. If the error clears within 30 seconds of reseating, the pack is charging normally. If the fault persists, check the dock's contact pins for debris or corrosion before assuming a pack defect.

Scanner dropping wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

The SF51 draws simultaneously from the scan engine and the wireless radio during a fast burst — both loads spike at the same moment. On a degraded or deeply discharged cell, this combined inrush pulls voltage below the radio module's minimum and the connection drops. A fully charged replacement pack with a healthy internal resistance restores the voltage headroom needed to sustain both loads. If dropouts continue after a full charge on the new pack, check the wireless channel congestion or access point distance rather than the battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SF51 scanner stops reading barcodes within the first few scans after I swap the battery — what's happening?

The scan engine in the SF51 needs the cell above a minimum voltage threshold to fire reliably — a new pack shipped at partial charge can sit just above the BMS cutoff, and the first few scan triggers pull it below the read threshold. Seat the new battery in the cradle and run a full charge cycle before use. After a complete charge, the laser or imager will have the full voltage headroom it needs to fire consistently from the first scan.

The scanner gets noticeably warm after a long shift — is that a battery fault?

Heat during extended use on the SF51 is normal — the scan engine, wireless radio, and processor all run inside a compact sealed housing with no active cooling. The battery itself contributes a small amount of resistive heat during sustained discharge. If the scanner feels hot to the point of discomfort rather than just warm, check that the housing vents are clear and that the scanner isn't enclosed in a holster during continuous scanning. A surface temperature that drops within a few minutes of stopping is a sign of normal thermal behaviour, not a defective pack.

The shift ended early — the new battery ran out faster than I expected compared to the old one. What drains it?

Scan burst frequency and wireless polling both draw current simultaneously on the SF51, and scan-heavy environments with constant Bluetooth or Wi-Fi traffic shorten endurance more than occasional use does. Also confirm the scanner's backlight timeout is set aggressively — a display left on between scans is a steady drain the original battery could mask as it aged. Check the device's power management settings and reduce the backlight-on duration to the shortest practical value to recover endurance.
