Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood NX-P500 / PKT-300 / TK-3601D — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (KNB-81L)
This is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Kenwood NX-P500, PKT-300, and TK-3601D portable two-way radios. It replaces OEM part numbers KNB-81L and KNB-81LI. The pack fits the original battery bay directly and uses the same connector and BMS communication protocol as the factory unit.
- NX-P500, PKT-300, TK-3601D fit group: These three radios share the same 3.7V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers all three without modification or adapter.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on the NX-P500 through repeated PTT transmit bursts and monitored BMS response. The overcurrent protection tripped correctly on fault simulation and reset cleanly on power cycle. Voltage held within spec across the full discharge curve.
- First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock LED shows a fault or blinks amber on first insertion, remove the pack and wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth. Reseat it firmly. The Kenwood dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it will begin charging.
Why the NX-P500 drops to reduced TX power mid-shift on a new battery
The NX-P500 monitors pack voltage in real time and steps down transmit power when voltage sags below its internal threshold. A new cell shipped at storage voltage — typically around 3.6V — has less headroom than a fully charged pack at 4.2V. Under sustained RF output, that sag crosses the radio's protection floor faster than expected. Charge the pack to full before the first shift and the TX power will hold at rated output throughout normal use.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after inserting a new KNB-81L
The NX-P500 uses voltage-threshold bar indicators, not a fuel gauge chip. A new pack leaves the warehouse at storage voltage, roughly 3.6–3.7V, which the radio correctly reads as a partially charged cell. This is not a fault — the cell has full capacity but is not at full charge voltage. Place the pack in the dock, allow a complete charge cycle until the LED goes green, and the indicator will show full bars at 4.2V.

Frequently Asked Questions
My NX-P500 cuts out completely when I press PTT — is the new KNB-81L pack faulty?
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead cell. The transmit current spike on the NX-P500 can briefly exceed the BMS protection threshold if the pack is below roughly 3.8V when you key up. Fully charge the pack first, then test PTT again. If the cutout persists on a full charge, check that the gold contact strip on the battery is clean and making firm contact with the radio's terminals.
The charger dock LED has been blinking for two hours and never switches to solid green — what's wrong?
A pack that's been in storage for several months can arrive below the dock's acceptance voltage floor. The dock won't enter full charge mode until the cell clears that threshold. Remove the pack, wait 60 seconds, and reseat it firmly — this resets the dock handshake. If the LED still won't go solid, the cell may need a trickle recovery cycle; some Kenwood desktop chargers will start this automatically after two or three reseating attempts.
The radio shows full bars straight after charging but drops two bars within the first 30 minutes of light use — is the 1800mAh capacity actually correct?
The NX-P500's bar indicator steps down at fixed voltage thresholds, and a new cell's voltage drops faster in the first few discharge cycles before the chemistry stabilises. This is normal break-in behaviour, not a capacity fault. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles and the voltage curve will flatten, holding each bar threshold longer. If the drop still happens after three cycles, measure resting voltage after a full charge — it should sit at or above 4.15V.
