Fits Kenwood TK-25A, TK-26A, TK-27A, and TK-28A portables; replaces PB-13, PB-13H, PB-17, PB-18, PB-14, PB-15 battery packs.
Outputs 7.4V at 1800mAh capacity, delivering consistent voltage under sustained RF transmission without sag.
Connector slides into the radio's battery slot with a positive locking tab; orientation is keyed and cannot be inserted backward.
We bench-tested this cell in a TK-25A under PTT load; the BMS accepted the charge cycle on first insertion without dock fault codes.
On first insertion into the charger dock, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — Kenwood platforms require a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TK-25A / TK-28A Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (PB-13)

This is a 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Kenwood TK-25A, TK-26A, TK-27A, TK-28A, and over 26 additional Kenwood portable two-way radio models. It replaces OEM part numbers PB-13, PB-13H, PB-14, PB-15, PB-17, and PB-18. The pack ships at storage voltage — not flat, not fully charged.

  • TK-2x series platform fit: The TK-25A through TK-28A share a common battery bay geometry and 7.4V BMS handshake protocol. All listed OEM part numbers were cross-referenced to this same voltage rail and contact configuration, which is why one replacement covers the full range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit loads on a TK-series dock and confirmed the BMS negotiates correctly at first insertion — no overcurrent trip, no false fault flag. Voltage under PTT load stayed within the radio's accepted operating window.
  • First-insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first seating, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Kenwood platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the TK-25A cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly inserted battery

The TK-25A draws a sharp current spike the moment PTT is pressed — transmit load is significantly higher than receive or standby draw. If the battery contacts are not fully seated, the BMS reads that spike as an overcurrent event and trips the protection circuit. The radio goes silent, and the pack may feel warm near the contacts. Reseat the battery with firm downward pressure until the latch clicks, then press PTT again — the BMS resets on a clean connection.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new PB-13

New Li-ion cells ship at roughly 3.6–3.7V per cell to meet transport regulations — that is storage voltage, not full charge. The TK series reads voltage thresholds to display battery bars, so a pack at storage voltage will show one or two bars short of full. This is not a fault with the pack. Run a full charge cycle in the dock first; once the cells reach 4.1–4.2V per cell, the bar indicator will reflect actual capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TK-28A drops to low-power TX mid-shift — is the new PB-13 already failing?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a failing pack. When the radio transmits continuously for extended periods, cell voltage dips temporarily under load — if it dips past the radio's low-voltage threshold, the TK platform cuts transmit power to protect the circuit. Let the radio sit on standby for two to three minutes; voltage recovers and full TX power returns. If sag is frequent from day one, check that the pack completed a full initial charge to 8.4V before field use.

The charger dock fault LED never clears after I insert the new battery — it just blinks continuously.

A pack shipped at storage voltage can sit below the dock's acceptance threshold if the cells have drained slightly further in transit. The Kenwood dock will not begin a standard charge cycle on a pack it reads as too low. Remove the pack, wipe all six gold contacts with a dry cloth, and reseat with firm pressure. If the fault LED persists, most Kenwood docks have a recovery or "wake" mode — hold the battery seated for 10–15 seconds on first insertion, which prompts the dock to attempt a trickle recovery charge rather than rejecting the pack outright.

Radio shows full bars right after charging but drops to two bars within the first few transmissions — what's happening?

The TK series bar indicator responds to instantaneous voltage, not a running average. A heavy PTT draw pulls cell voltage down sharply for a fraction of a second, and the display catches that dip before it recovers — so bars fall fast and climb back up between transmissions. This is normal cell behaviour and is not a sign of low capacity. If bars drop and do not recover between transmissions, check that the battery contacts are clean and that the pack reached 8.4V at the end of its last charge cycle.
