Fits Kenwood TK-3230, TK-3230BKP, TK-3230DX, and ProTalk XLS 464–467 models; replaces OEM KNB-46L battery pack.
7.4V lithium-ion cell at 1800mAh delivers stable voltage under sustained RF transmit loads on this portable radio.
Slides into the radio's battery slot with a single locking tab; connector orientation is keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
We ran a full discharge cycle on the TK-3230 dock and confirmed the BMS accepted handshake on first charge without fault LED.
If the charger dock shows a fault light after inserting this cell, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Kenwood platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TK-3230 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (KNB-46L)

This is a 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion replacement for the Kenwood KNB-46L battery pack. It fits the TK-3230, TK-3230BKP, TK-3230DX, and ProTalk XLS 464–467 series portable two-way radios. Dimensions are 97.20 × 63.30 × 29.62 mm — same form factor as the OEM pack.

  • TK-3230 platform fit: The TK-3230 family shares a common battery bay and contact layout across its variants. This pack matches that connector pinout and runs the same 7.4V nominal rail the radio expects — no adapter or modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit loads on the TK-3230 platform. The BMS handled the PTT current spike without tripping into overcurrent lockout, and the pack seated and handshook correctly with the Kenwood drop-in charger dock.
  • First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, pull the pack out, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. The Kenwood charger platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it will begin charging.

Why the TK-3230 cuts out mid-transmission on a new KNB-46L

New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically 3.7–3.8V per cell, not full charge. When PTT is pressed, transmit current spikes sharply. If the pack hasn't been fully charged first, that spike can drag cell voltage below the BMS overcurrent threshold and trigger a momentary cutout. The fix is straightforward: charge the pack fully before putting the radio into service. A full charge brings each cell to 4.2V and gives the BMS the headroom it needs to absorb the transmit surge without shutting down.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a fresh pack

The TK-3230 reads battery state through voltage thresholds — it doesn't have a fuel gauge chip. A new pack at storage voltage sits below the top threshold, so the radio displays one bar short of full even though the pack is not faulty. Place the pack on charge in the Kenwood dock and run it to a complete charge cycle. Once the cells reach 8.4V across the pack, the radio will display the correct full-bar reading on next power-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TK-3230 drops to low TX power halfway through a shift — is this a radio fault or the battery?

This is almost always voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a radio fault. As the pack depletes, cell voltage drops under the transmit load and the radio's protection circuit reduces TX power to stay within operating voltage. Check the bar indicator mid-shift — if it shows two bars or fewer, the pack is the limiting factor. Charge the pack before your next shift and avoid leaving it partially discharged between uses.

The Kenwood charger dock blinks a fault LED and never clears after I insert the new KNB-46L pack — what's wrong?

A fault LED that won't clear usually means the pack voltage is below the dock's acceptance threshold when first inserted. New packs can arrive at low storage voltage after time in transit. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, reseat it firmly, and leave it in the dock for 10–15 minutes — some Kenwood docks require a brief trickle phase before they accept the pack and switch to normal charge mode. If the fault clears, let it run to a full cycle before use.

The TK-3230 cuts out the moment I press PTT, then recovers a second later — what causes this?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip triggered by the transmit current spike hitting an underpowered or cold pack. The BMS momentarily disconnects the output, the radio resets, then the BMS resets itself. It happens most often when the pack is below 50% charge or has been sitting in a cold environment. Charge the pack fully and bring it to room temperature — at 8.4V under no-load, the BMS has enough headroom to absorb the PTT surge without tripping.
