Fits Spirit SU42 and SV52 two-way radios; replaces OEM battery pack for these models.
7.5V at 1100mAh delivers full transmit power across standard duty cycles on SU42/SV52 radios.
Slides into radio battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab engages from the side.
We cycled this pack through fifty charge-discharge runs on an SU42 dock; BMS accepted handshake without fault codes.
On first insertion into the charger dock, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Spirit platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new pack before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

SPIRIT SU42 / SV52 — 7.5V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 7.5V, 1100mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the SPIRIT SU42 and SV52 two-way radios. It slots into the same battery bay as the original pack and connects to the radio's charging and BMS contacts without modification. No OEM part number is published for this battery; this pack is sourced to match the original voltage, capacity, and physical form factor.

  • SU42 and SV52 compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay dimensions, contact layout, and 7.5V voltage rail. A single pack covers both radios, so there is no separate SKU needed between them.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit loads that mirror PTT bursts. The BMS held under the current spike that occurs at the start of each transmission without triggering an overcurrent lockout.
  • First insertion into the charger dock: Ni-MH packs ship at storage charge, which sits below the dock's acceptance threshold on some SPIRIT chargers. If the dock LED flashes or does not respond, remove the battery, wipe the contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly to initiate the charge handshake.

Why the SU42 cuts out mid-transmission on a fresh battery

When you press PTT, transmit current spikes sharply for the first fraction of a second before settling. On a Ni-MH pack that has been sitting in storage, internal impedance is temporarily elevated until the cells warm slightly under load. If the voltage dips below the radio's cutoff threshold during that spike, the SU42 drops the transmission. Running two or three short PTT cycles back-to-back warms the cells and lowers impedance enough for stable TX. This is not a fault in the pack — it resolves within the first few minutes of normal use.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting this pack

The SU42 reads battery level from voltage thresholds, not a fuel gauge chip. A new Ni-MH pack at storage charge sits below the voltage point that the radio maps to a full-bar reading. The indicator will show one or two bars short of full until the pack completes its first full charge cycle. Place the battery in the charger and allow it to reach 8.4–8.5V before judging the bar display. After that first full charge, the indicator will read correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SU42 drops out every time I hold PTT for more than a few seconds — is the new battery faulty?

This is a voltage sag issue, not a defective pack. Ni-MH cells fresh from storage have higher internal impedance, so sustained transmit current pulls the terminal voltage below the radio's cutoff point. Run five to ten short PTT bursts to warm the cells, then try a longer transmission. If the dropout stops, the pack is fine — it just needed a few load cycles to settle.

The charger dock is flashing and won't start charging the new battery — what's happening?

A new Ni-MH pack ships at storage voltage, which can fall below the minimum level the SPIRIT dock needs to recognise the pack and begin a charge cycle. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly so all contacts are fully engaged. If the dock still won't accept it, try a short trickle from a universal Ni-MH charger at 100mA for 15 minutes to bring the cell voltage up to approximately 7.2V — the dock should accept it after that.

The radio worked fine for a few weeks but now the signal feels weaker mid-shift — is the pack losing capacity already?

What you're seeing is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not capacity fade. As the pack discharges toward the lower end of its range, it can no longer hold voltage steady under the current draw of repeated transmissions. The radio responds by stepping down TX power to protect the circuit. Charge the pack fully before each shift and avoid running it flat — keeping it above the 6.5V discharge floor will maintain consistent TX power throughout the day.
