The Edge 15 BIOS reads health data stored in the old cell's EEPROM and compares it against the new cell's reported parameters at first boot. Because the new cell presents a fresh EEPROM with no cycle history, the BIOS interprets the mismatch as a fault. This is not a defective cell — it is a calibration gap. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, and the BIOS learn cycle will overwrite the stale EEPROM baseline with accurate data from the new cell.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% shown after installing replacement cell

This happens because the fuel gauge IC is still using the old cell's discharge curve to predict remaining capacity. The new cell hits a voltage cliff under combined CPU and display load at a different point than the old cell did. The fuel gauge reads 20–30% on the old curve, but the actual cell voltage has already dropped below the EC's cutoff threshold. Run two to three full discharge and charge cycles — by the third cycle, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates against the new cell's curve and the shutdowns stop.

Windows shows the battery as "Unknown" or 0% right after I installed the new cell — is it dead?

It is not dead. The fuel gauge IC on the Edge 15 loses its reference data when the old cell is removed, so it reports unknown or zero until it has a full discharge-to-charge cycle to calibrate against the new cell's chemistry. Boot the laptop, let it run on battery until Windows forces hibernate, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that first complete cycle, the percentage reading stabilises.

The Edge 15 BIOS is showing the wrong Wh rating — it says 45Wh but Windows reports something different. Which one is correct?

The BIOS reads the Wh value stored in the cell's EEPROM at manufacture — 42.92Wh is the actual rated capacity of this cell. Windows pulls its figure from the fuel gauge IC, which scales the reading dynamically as the IC calibrates. The two numbers converge after two or three full cycles once the fuel gauge IC has mapped the new cell's actual discharge curve. Use the product data figure of 42.92Wh as your reference.

The new battery stopped charging at 80% and won't go higher — what is stopping it?

The Edge 15 has a BIOS-level charge threshold setting — Lenovo's Conservation Mode caps charging at roughly 80% to reduce long-term cell stress when the laptop is used primarily on AC. This is a firmware control, not a battery fault. Open Lenovo Vantage, navigate to Power, and switch Conservation Mode off. Charging will then proceed to 100%.
