Run one complete discharge-to-hibernate then a full uninterrupted charge to 100% — the BIOS battery learn cycle overwrites the stale EEPROM values and the health warning clears.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% remaining shown on the fuel gauge

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual discharge curve. The old curve mapped a voltage cliff at a higher state-of-charge than where the new cell actually drops off under full CPU plus display load. The system cuts power because the real terminal voltage hits the low-voltage threshold before the gauge expects it. Run two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles and the fuel gauge IC recalibrates — after that, the shutdown point tracks accurately to the cell's true voltage floor near 6.0V.

My IdeaPad S21E-20 shows the battery as 0% or "unknown" right after I put in the new cell — is it dead?

The fuel gauge IC on this model reads EEPROM data written by the old battery and loses reference when a new cell is seated. It has not yet mapped the new cell's voltage curve to a state-of-charge value. Run the laptop down to hibernate on battery, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that first full cycle the gauge syncs to the new cell and reports correctly.

The replacement cell reports a different Wh rating in Lenovo Vantage than the original — should I be concerned?

The Wh figure in Vantage pulls from the EEPROM on the battery controller, not a live measurement. The value stored there reflects the rated chemistry spec from the original OEM cell, which may differ slightly from the actual cell chemistry used in a replacement. The real-world energy the cell delivers matches the 22.94Wh capacity in the spec. After one full discharge-to-hibernate and recharge cycle, the BIOS recalculates design capacity and the displayed Wh figure normalises.

Charge stops at 80% and never goes higher — is the new battery faulty?

On the IdeaPad S21E-20, Lenovo's firmware includes a BIOS-controlled charge limit that caps charging at 80% when Conservation Mode is active in Lenovo Vantage. This is a firmware setting, not a cell fault. Open Lenovo Vantage, go to Power, find Battery Charge Threshold or Conservation Mode, and switch it off. Charging will then proceed to 100%.
