After a cell swap, the tablet's fuel gauge IC still holds the charge curve data from the original battery. The mismatch between stored calibration and the new cell's actual output causes percentage readings to drop in uneven steps or fall faster than expected early in the discharge. This is not a fault with the replacement cell — it is a calibration drift issue. My IdeaPad A1 keeps shutting off at around 20% — is the new battery faulty?

The new cell is almost certainly fine. The tablet's fuel gauge IC was calibrated to the old, worn-out battery, so it misreads the voltage cliff on the new cell and trips the protection circuit early. Run the tablet down to automatic shutoff from a full charge, then charge it uninterrupted all the way to 100%. After that one full cycle, the gauge recalibrates to the new cell's voltage curve and the early shutdowns stop.

The battery percentage is jumping around after I installed the replacement — it went from 60% to 40% in minutes without heavy use.

That jump is fuel gauge drift. The IdeaPad A1's charge-tracking IC stored the decay profile of the original cell, and it no longer matches the new cell's actual output. The cell itself is delivering correct voltage — the percentage display is the problem. Do one complete discharge to automatic shutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the IC recalibrates against the new 3.7V nominal curve. Erratic readings clear after that single cycle.

The tablet feels warm near the charging port during the first few charges with the new battery — should I be concerned?

Warmth during the first few charges is normal. The charge IC on the mainboard runs slightly hotter while it characterises the new cell's internal resistance and sets the correct termination voltage. We saw the same behaviour on the bench with this cell — surface temperature stays within safe range and settles after two or three full cycles. If the tablet feels hot to the touch or the charge stops before 100%, check that the charger output matches the original 5V specification.
