LifeTec LT-9986 / 681 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH battery for the LifeTec LT-9986 and 681 cordless phone handsets. It replaces the original pack when the handset no longer holds a charge or drops calls mid-conversation. Dimensions are 45 x 30 x 10mm — same footprint as the factory cell.

• LT-9986 and 681 handset fit: Both models run the same 3.6V single-cell Ni-MH voltage rail with an identical connector and contact layout. One battery covers both handsets in a multi-handset setup without modification.
• Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a cordless phone test rig. The BMS accepted full charge without thermal flag, and standby current draw stayed within the base station's expected range.
• First-charge protocol for Ni-MH cordless packs: After fitting this battery, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cells from storage have low initial capacity — the slow overnight charge is what brings them up to rated 700mAh. Skipping this step and using the handset immediately will give a misleadingly short first session.

Base station charging error on a new Ni-MH pack

DECT base stations detect a new battery by monitoring voltage rise during the charge cycle. A Ni-MH cell that has sat in storage can arrive at 3.0V or below — some bases read this as a fault and flash an error light instead of charging. The fix is simple: leave the handset seated in the base without interruption. Most LifeTec bases will retry the charge cycle automatically and begin accepting the pack once voltage climbs above 3.2V.

Talk time shorter than original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells do not deliver full rated capacity on the first cycle — this is normal chemistry, not a faulty unit. Capacity builds over three to five full charge-discharge cycles as the cell's crystal structure stabilises. If talk time is still noticeably short after five cycles, check that the handset contacts are clean and making firm contact with the battery terminals. A dirty or bent contact raises internal resistance and prevents the cell from reaching its full 700mAh.
