Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Livescribe Echo Smartpen 8GB — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (ICR12300)
This 3.7V 350mAh Li-ion cell replaces the ICR12300 battery inside the Livescribe Echo Smartpen 8GB. The Echo records handwritten notes and audio simultaneously, so the battery supports the pen's processor, microphone, speaker, and IR camera at the same time. A degraded cell causes uneven power delivery across those systems — a fresh cell restores full function.
- Echo Smartpen 8GB fit: The Echo 8GB uses a compact cylindrical Li-ion cell in a fixed cavity — the ICR12300 matches the exact dimensions (28.50 × 12.00 × 12.00mm), connector orientation, and 3.7V nominal rail the pen's BMS expects. No modifications needed.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the Echo platform. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, balanced charging terminated correctly, and all subsystems — audio, IR tracking, and storage — stayed active under simultaneous load.
- First-use calibration on the Echo: After fitting the new battery, complete a full active writing session — several pages of continuous ink use — before syncing to the Livescribe app. The pen's power management calibrates against real writing load, not standby. Skipping this can cause the battery meter to read inaccurately until a proper load cycle runs.
Why the Echo 8GB drops audio sync mid-session on a weak battery
The Echo records audio and maps it to handwriting using an IR camera that tracks dot-pattern paper in real time. Both the microphone and IR system draw current simultaneously, and the pen's processor links the two data streams on the fly. A degraded cell sags under this combined load even if the battery indicator still shows charge. The pen prioritises the processor and drops audio sync first — writing continues but the audio-to-note link breaks. Replacing the cell eliminates the sag point.
Echo battery reads full but the pen shuts off during a writing session
This happens when cell capacity has dropped but the BMS voltage curve hasn't updated to reflect it — the pen reads resting voltage, not available capacity. Under active load the voltage dips below the cutoff threshold faster than the indicator predicts, triggering an abrupt shutdown. Fit the new ICR12300 cell, then run one full charge to 4.2V before your next session. After one complete charge-and-use cycle the BMS recalibrates its state-of-charge curve against the new cell.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Echo Smartpen stopped syncing handwriting to the app after I swapped the battery — what's wrong?
Cutting power during a battery swap clears the pen's active Bluetooth session. The Livescribe app treats the pen as a new device after a full power loss. Open the app, remove the Echo from your paired devices list, then re-pair it from scratch. Once paired, run a short writing session and sync — the handwriting link should restore immediately.
The replacement battery drains noticeably faster when the pen is just sitting in a drawer — is something wrong?
The Echo 8GB maintains a low-power Bluetooth standby state even when you're not writing, and that draws current continuously. This is normal behaviour, but it means storage drain is higher than you'd expect from a 350mAh cell. Go into the Livescribe app settings and disable Bluetooth on the pen when it's not in use. That drops the standby draw to near-zero and the cell holds its charge properly during storage.
The pen feels unresponsive on paper right after the battery swap — it's not picking up my writing reliably.
The IR camera and dot-tracking system need a stable voltage to read the NCODE dot pattern accurately. Immediately after a battery swap, before the BMS has run a load cycle, voltage delivery can be slightly inconsistent. Charge the pen fully to 4.2V, then write two or three continuous pages of normal notes. That active session lets the power management settle, and dot registration tightens up once the system has run under real writing load.
