Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Magellan RoadMate 1212 / 1217 / 1220 / 1230 — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (384.00020.005)

This is a 3.7V, 1100mAh Li-Polymer cell for the Magellan RoadMate 1212, 1217, 1220, and 1230 GPS navigators. It replaces OEM part numbers 384.00020.005, 5390-B001-0780, and 0843FL009024. The battery powers the touchscreen display and GPS receiver during vehicle navigation.

  • RoadMate 1212–1230 platform fit: These four models share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 3.7V supply rail. The BMS handshake is identical across this generation, so one cell covers the full range without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the RoadMate platform. The BMS accepted the cell without fault flags, voltage regulation held steady under simultaneous GPS and display load, and the protection circuit tripped cleanly at the expected low-voltage cutoff.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition after fitting: After a full power removal the GPS chip loses its almanac cache and must perform a cold start. Power the unit on outdoors with a clear sky view and let it acquire a satellite fix before driving — first fix after a swap takes 5–10 minutes; subsequent warm starts drop back under a minute once the almanac is rebuilt.

GPS accuracy reduced at low battery on the RoadMate

The RoadMate's receiver draws more current during active satellite tracking than during standby. When cell voltage sags toward the low end — roughly below 3.5V under load — some units reduce receiver sensitivity to protect the voltage rail. This shows up as a wider position circle on the map or missed turn cues in dense urban canyons. Keeping the cell above that threshold, either through in-car charging or a fresh battery, keeps the receiver running at full sensitivity.

RoadMate shuts off without warning before the battery indicator hits empty

The on-screen battery gauge on these units is calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve. A new or significantly degraded cell has a slightly different voltage-to-capacity slope, so the indicator and the actual cutoff voltage fall out of sync. The device hits the hardware low-voltage shutoff at around 3.0V while the gauge still shows one bar. Run two or three full charge-and-use cycles to let the firmware recalibrate its state-of-charge estimate against the new cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

My RoadMate lost all my saved routes and favourites after I swapped the battery — is that gone for good?

Saved routes and POIs on these RoadMate models are stored in flash memory, not battery-backed RAM, so a full power removal does not wipe them. If they are missing after the swap, the unit likely performed a factory reset due to a brief firmware fault on first boot with the new cell. Power the device fully off, then back on, and check the Saved Places menu — in most cases the data reappears once the OS completes its initialisation cycle.

My RoadMate is taking forever to find satellites after fitting the new battery — something wrong with the replacement cell?

Nothing is wrong with the cell. After a full power interruption, the GPS chip discards its stored almanac and ephemeris data and must rebuild them from scratch — that is a cold start, and it takes 5–10 minutes outdoors with a clear sky. The replacement battery does not affect the receiver itself. Park outside away from tall buildings, leave the unit powered on without moving, and the fix time drops back to under a minute on the next power cycle once the almanac is cached again.

The RoadMate drains noticeably faster when I am actively navigating compared to when it is just sitting on the dash — is the new battery faulty?

It is not faulty — this is normal load behaviour for this device. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver, the route-calculation processor, and the backlit touchscreen simultaneously, which pulls significantly more current than standby. If drain still feels excessive, drop the screen brightness one or two steps in Settings; the display is the single largest power draw on this platform and reducing it has a measurable effect on how long the cell lasts between charges.
