It fits the National EZ6181, EZ6481, EZ6482, EZ6482HKH, and over a dozen other models in this cordless drill range. BMS cutoff on motor-start inrush in the EZ6181 and EZ6481
Cordless drills in this voltage class draw a current spike the moment the trigger is pulled — the motor needs far more current to overcome static load than it does to keep spinning. On a cold or recently charged pack, that inrush spike can briefly exceed the BMS overcurrent threshold and cut the circuit before the motor gets moving. This is more common when cells are below 8.5V resting voltage. Let the pack sit on charge for a full cycle and confirm resting voltage is above 9.0V before heavy drilling.
Tool bogs and slows under sustained load mid-job
If the drill slows noticeably when driving screws into hard timber or boring large holes, the most likely cause is voltage sag — the cells can't maintain rail voltage under sustained high-current draw. Check the battery contact rails on both the pack and the tool for corrosion or debris; even minor resistance at the contact point amplifies sag. Clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and retest. If sag persists after cleaning, measure pack voltage under load — anything dropping below 8.0V under moderate draw indicates cell degradation.

My EZ6181 cuts out the instant I pull the trigger — why does it keep tripping off?
That's a BMS overcurrent trip caused by motor-start inrush current hitting the protection threshold before the motor gets moving. It's most likely to happen when the pack is cold or sitting near the low end of its charge. Warm the pack to room temperature and run a full charge cycle. If the resting voltage reads above 9.0V and the problem continues, clean the battery contact rails on both the pack and the drill body — high contact resistance makes the current spike worse.
The charger never does anything when I put this new pack on it — no lights, no charging.
A pack stored at low voltage can drop below the charger's acceptance threshold, so the charger won't initiate a cycle. This is common with Ni-MH packs that have sat on a shelf. Try a different charger that supports a recovery or conditioning mode, which applies a low trickle current to bring cells back up to acceptance voltage. Once the pack reaches approximately 8.0V resting, a standard charger should recognise it and begin a normal charge cycle.
The drill runs fine for a while, then gets noticeably weaker as the job goes on — is this the battery or the tool?
This is almost always voltage sag — under sustained load, the cell bank can't hold the rail voltage steady and output drops. First, clean the contact rails on the pack and the tool with isopropyl alcohol, as resistance at the contacts accelerates sag. Then check resting voltage after a full charge — it should read 9.6V or close to it. If sag starts immediately on a freshly charged pack with clean contacts, the cells have degraded and a replacement pack will restore full torque output.
