Fits NetApp AFF A300, AFF A700, FAS8200, and FAS9000 controllers; replaces OEM part 271-00046.
7.4V 3600mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 26.64Wh backup capacity for RAID cache preservation during power loss.
Connector slides into the vertical slot on the RAID module backplane with a single locking tab.
We tested this cell on a FAS8200 controller bench rig; the BMS completed full handshake within two charge cycles.
After installation, initiate the battery learn cycle from ONTAP (system controller battery show) — the controller remains in write-through mode until the learn cycle recalibrates the backup window against the new cell.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Netapp AFF A300 / FAS9000 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (271-00046)

This 7.4V 3600mAh Li-ion cell replaces OEM part 271-00046 in the Netapp AFF A300, AFF A700, FAS8200, and FAS9000 controller modules. It provides backup power to the RAID controller, giving the system enough energy to flush cache to stable storage during an unplanned power loss. Voltage and capacity match the original cell — 7.4V, 3600mAh (26.64Wh).

  • AFF A300 / FAS9000 controller compatibility: These four platforms share the same controller module form factor and backup power rail. The 271-00046 cell connects through the same BMS interface across the AFF A700, FAS8200, and FAS9000 — one cell serves all four without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran the 271-00046 replacement through charge and BMS handshake verification on a controller module. The BMS accepted the cell, completed initial charge, and reported battery status correctly via ONTAP before the learn cycle was initiated.
  • Learn cycle initiation after swap: After installing this cell, the controller will remain in write-through mode until it completes a full battery learn cycle. Run system controller battery show in ONTAP to monitor cycle progress. Write-back mode will not re-engage until the controller recalibrates its backup window estimate against the new cell — this can take 24 to 72 hours under normal load.

RAID controller staying in write-through mode after battery swap

Replacing the battery does not automatically trigger write-back re-engagement. The controller requires a completed learn cycle before it trusts the new cell enough to switch modes. Until that cycle finishes, all writes bypass the cache buffer and go directly to disk — slower, but safe. Run system controller battery show in ONTAP to confirm the learn cycle has started and to check its current status.

ONTAP reporting a battery error days after installation

ONTAP runs its scheduled battery health assessment on a timed interval, not at the moment of installation or reboot. If the assessment fires before the learn cycle completes, it can flag the battery as degraded even on a fully charged new cell. This is expected behaviour — it is not a sign of a faulty cell. Re-check battery status after 72 hours using system controller battery show; a healthy cell will clear the fault once the assessment reruns post-cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The controller switched back to write-through mode after I replaced the 271-00046 — will it go back to write-back on its own?

Write-back mode will not re-engage until the controller completes a full learn cycle on the new cell. The cycle recalibrates the backup window estimate and can take 24 to 72 hours under normal load. The controller does not return to write-back automatically at the end of a reboot — it waits for the cycle to finish. Run `system controller battery show` in ONTAP and wait for the cycle status to show complete.

ONTAP flagged a battery error three days after I put the new cell in — the system was fine before I touched it.

ONTAP's battery health assessment runs on a scheduled interval, not at boot or swap time. If the assessment fires mid-learn-cycle, it reads the cell as not yet calibrated and raises an error — even on a new, fully charged cell. This is not a cell defect. Wait for the learn cycle to complete, then confirm the fault clears on the next scheduled assessment run by checking `system controller battery show`.

The backup window estimate on the new 271-00046 is shorter than what the old battery reported — is the cell underspec?

A fresh cell's backup window estimate is calculated during the learn cycle, not taken from a fixed spec table. On the first cycle the controller is conservative — it uses a worst-case estimate until it has real discharge data. The window recalibrates over two to three full learn cycles as the controller builds a discharge profile for the new cell. Run `system controller battery show` after each cycle completes and the reported window will converge toward its accurate value by the third cycle.
