Ventilator will not power on after the replacement battery sat in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage, and if voltage drops below approximately 10.5V the N-5500's BMS will refuse to initiate a boot sequence as a protection measure. The fix is to connect the ventilator to mains power first, allow the charge circuit to bring the cell above the BMS recovery threshold, then attempt power-on. If the unit still does not respond after 15 minutes on charge, disconnect mains, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, and let the charge IC reinitialise before trying again.

Ni-MH cells under medical device load profiles experience voltage sag in the first 10 cycles while the cell chemistry stabilises. The N-5500's protection circuit treats that sag as a low-voltage event and cuts power to protect the patient circuit. This is normal early-cycle behaviour, not a faulty cell. Keep the ventilator on mains power during the break-in period and use the battery for transport only once it has completed at least five full charge-discharge cycles.
The charge indicator on the N-5500 won't reach 100% on the first charge — should I be concerned?
The N-5500 charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or cold cell, so the first charge often terminates slightly below the full-charge threshold. Leave the battery connected to mains through a second charge cycle without interrupting it. After the second cycle the charge IC updates its end-of-charge detection and the indicator will reach 100% consistently from that point forward.
