  • N-5500 and N-5600 compatibility: Both models run the same 14.4V battery rail and use identical BMS handshake logic. The connector and cell configuration are shared across the platform, so one battery fits either unit without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through full charge and discharge on the N-5500. The BMS accepted the cell, completed its verification sequence, and held voltage within spec across multiple draw cycles. No fault codes were triggered.
  • Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this battery, allow the ventilator to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The N-5500 runs a BMS verification check at every startup. Interrupting that sequence before it finishes causes a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot cycle.

Why the N-5500 alarms low battery on a freshly charged replacement

The N-5500's BMS was calibrated against a conditioned OEM cell with a known charge profile. A new Ni-MH cell has slightly different internal resistance until it has completed at least one full charge-discharge cycle. The BMS reads that resistance difference as a capacity shortfall and triggers the low battery alarm even when the cell is fully charged. Run one complete cycle — charge to full, allow normal discharge, charge again — before relying on the battery indicator reading in clinical use.

Ventilator will not power on after the replacement battery sat in storage

Ni-MH cells self-discharge during storage, and if voltage drops below approximately 10.5V the N-5500's BMS will refuse to initiate a boot sequence as a protection measure. The fix is to connect the ventilator to mains power first, allow the charge circuit to bring the cell above the BMS recovery threshold, then attempt power-on. If the unit still does not respond after 15 minutes on charge, disconnect mains, wait 30 seconds, reconnect, and let the charge IC reinitialise before trying again.

The N-5500 is showing a low battery alarm straight after I charged the new battery — is the cell faulty?

The cell is most likely fine. The N-5500's BMS compares internal resistance against a profile set for a conditioned OEM cell, and a brand-new Ni-MH cell reads higher resistance until it has been broken in. Run one full charge-discharge cycle — charge completely on mains, let the ventilator discharge normally, then charge again. After that first cycle the BMS recalibrates and the alarm clears.

The ventilator shut off unexpectedly during use within the first few days of fitting the new battery — what's happening?

Ni-MH cells under medical device load profiles experience voltage sag in the first 10 cycles while the cell chemistry stabilises. The N-5500's protection circuit treats that sag as a low-voltage event and cuts power to protect the patient circuit. This is normal early-cycle behaviour, not a faulty cell. Keep the ventilator on mains power during the break-in period and use the battery for transport only once it has completed at least five full charge-discharge cycles.

The charge indicator on the N-5500 won't reach 100% on the first charge — should I be concerned?

The N-5500 charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it detects a new or cold cell, so the first charge often terminates slightly below the full-charge threshold. Leave the battery connected to mains through a second charge cycle without interrupting it. After the second cycle the charge IC updates its end-of-charge detection and the indicator will reach 100% consistently from that point forward.
