Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

RED One / Epic / Scarlet Dragon — 14.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (SM-4230RC)
This is a 14.8V, 9600mAh (142.08Wh) lithium-ion battery built to the SM-4230RC specification. It fits the RED One, Epic, and Scarlet Dragon cinema cameras. Voltage and cell chemistry match the original pack — the camera's power rail and BMS receive what they expect.
- One, Epic, and Scarlet Dragon platform fit: All three bodies use the same V-lock adjacent battery interface, 14.8V nominal rail, and share the SM-4230RC specification. The connector keying and BMS handshake protocol are identical across the platform, so one replacement pack covers all three bodies.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on compatible RED hardware. The BMS reported accurate state-of-charge and engaged protection cutoffs at expected low-voltage thresholds. No false-low warnings appeared during mid-cycle draws.
- First-install charge cycle on RED bodies: Seat the battery and run a full charge through the OEM charger or camera body before your first shoot. RED's BMS maps the discharge curve during this initial cycle — skipping it can cause the battery-remaining indicator to read inaccurately throughout the pack's life.
Why RED One and Epic bodies reject a new third-party cell on first install
RED cinema bodies perform an authentication check against the battery's BMS on every power-on. A fresh cell that has not yet completed a charge cycle from within an approved charger can fail this handshake and trigger a "no battery" or "incompatible" flag. The body is reading an uncalibrated state-of-charge register, not a hardware mismatch. One full charge via the RED charger or camera body resolves this — the BMS writes the calibration data the camera needs to accept the pack.
Battery percentage jumping erratically during a RED Dragon shoot
The RED battery indicator maps display percentage to specific voltage thresholds calibrated for the OEM cell's discharge curve. A replacement cell with a slightly different mid-range discharge slope causes the indicator to jump — for example, dropping from 60% to 30% within a few minutes of heavy sensor and codec load. The cell is not defective; the voltage is falling through thresholds the camera treats as steep drop-off points. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through the camera body and the BMS will remap its threshold readings to the actual discharge curve of the new pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
My RED One shows "no battery" with the new pack seated — is the cell dead on arrival?
Almost certainly not. RED bodies run a BMS handshake on every power-on, and a new uncalibrated cell often fails that check before it has completed a single charge cycle. Seat the battery, connect the OEM RED charger, and let it charge to 100% without interruption. After that first full charge the camera's BMS accepts the pack and the "no battery" flag clears.
The battery percentage on my Epic or Scarlet Dragon is jumping around — drops 30% in minutes then stabilises. What's happening?
The RED battery indicator maps percentage to fixed voltage thresholds tuned to the OEM cell's discharge curve. A replacement cell with a slightly different mid-discharge slope hits those thresholds at different points, causing sudden apparent drops even when real capacity remains. Run two complete charge-discharge cycles through the camera body. After that the BMS recalibrates its threshold mapping to the new cell's actual curve and readout stabilises.
My RED One battery drains noticeably faster in cold weather on location — is the pack faulty?
It's not a fault — lithium-ion cells lose available capacity as temperature drops, and a 14.8V high-capacity pack like the SM-4230RC sees that effect above 0°C on sustained sensor and codec draws. Internal resistance rises in the cold, which increases voltage sag under load and triggers the BMS low-voltage cutoff earlier than at room temperature. Keep the spare pack inside a jacket or insulated bag between shots and let it return to above 10°C before seating it in the camera body.
