These mid-2000s devices use a slim single-cell pack with a three-contact connector tied to the onboard fuel gauge IC. Swap it in when the original cell no longer holds enough charge for daily calls and texts.

Why the SCP-5000 reports wrong battery percentage after a cell swap

The SCP-series fuel gauge IC tracks charge state using a coulomb counter that learned the discharge curve of the original cell over many cycles. A new cell has a slightly different internal resistance and voltage-versus-capacity profile. Until the IC re-maps that curve, the percentage display drifts — often reading 40% when the phone is close to shutdown. One full discharge-to-auto-off followed by a full uninterrupted charge resets the reference points the counter uses.

Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the replacement cell

This happens when the modem fires during a call or the backlight surges and pulls more current than the cell can sustain at that state of charge. The cell voltage dips below the 3.0V protection cutoff under load even though the gauge shows charge remaining. The fuel gauge IC hasn't yet mapped the new cell's voltage cliff accurately, so it doesn't warn the OS in time. Run the full calibration cycle first — one complete discharge to shutdown, then a full charge to 4.2V — before judging the cell's actual capacity.

The phone powers on after installing the new battery but shuts off suddenly when I make a call — still shows 25% left. What's wrong?

The cell voltage is dropping below the protection cutoff under the load of the modem transmitting, even though the fuel gauge still shows charge remaining. This happens because the coulomb counter is calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve, not the new one — it doesn't see the voltage cliff coming. Run one full discharge to auto-shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that cycle, the fuel gauge IC remaps the curve and the shutdowns stop.

My SCP-5000 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months before I installed it. Is the cell dead?

Probably not dead — but the BMS has likely tripped into lockout because the cell self-discharged below 2.5V during storage. The protection circuit cuts all output at that threshold to prevent cell damage. Connect the phone to a wall charger and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button; the charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell before the BMS will allow normal operation. If the charge indicator light doesn't appear within 30 minutes, check the charger output with a multimeter — you need at least 5V at the connector.

The battery percentage jumps around erratically — goes from 60% down to 10% in a few minutes, then back up. Is the battery faulty?

This is the fuel gauge IC recalibrating against the new cell, not a faulty battery. The coulomb counter lost its reference when the old cell was removed, and it's now estimating state of charge from open-circuit voltage snapshots rather than a tracked curve — those snapshots are noisy under load. Complete one full uninterrupted discharge-to-shutdown followed by a full charge to 4.2V. The erratic jumping typically stops after that single calibration cycle.
