Why VoIP calls drop during an outage even when the modem stays online

This is a firmware recognition delay, not a faulty battery. The NA942S runs an internal battery acceptance sequence when a new cell is connected — it checks cell voltage, internal resistance, and BMS response before clearing the error state. This process can take up to 24 hours on a first cycle. If the error light persists past 24 hours, confirm the cell voltage at the connector reads at least 7.0V with a multimeter before concluding there's a fault.

Allow 4 hours of uninterrupted charging before triggering or trusting the self-test result. The battery error LED has been on for 12 hours since I installed the replacement — is the cell dead?

It's almost certainly the firmware acceptance sequence, not a dead cell. The NA942S can take up to 24 hours to clear a battery error on a new cell while it runs its internal resistance and BMS handshake checks. Leave the modem powered and connected to mains for the full 24 hours before drawing any conclusions. If the error persists past 24 hours, measure voltage at the battery connector — a healthy cell at rest should read at least 7.0V.
