Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony NEX-5 / NEX-5A / NEX-5K / NEX-5D Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (NP-FW50)
This is a 7.4V, 1050mAh Li-ion replacement cell for the Sony NP-FW50 battery pack. It fits the NEX-5, NEX-5A, NEX-5K, and NEX-5D mirrorless camera bodies, along with over 90 additional Sony Alpha and NEX models that share the same NP-FW50 form factor. Voltage and capacity match the OEM spec exactly.
- NEX-5 series compatibility: The NEX-5, NEX-5A, NEX-5K, and NEX-5D all run on the same 7.4V battery rail and use identical connector orientation and BMS communication protocol — which is why one NP-FW50 cell covers the entire line.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a NEX-5 body. The BMS handshake completed correctly, the camera's battery icon populated without error flags, and the protection circuit triggered at the expected low-voltage cutoff point.
- First-install charge cycle: Before your first shoot, run one full charge inside the camera body or OEM charger rather than a third-party charger. Sony's BMS maps its battery-remaining display to the cell's discharge curve during that initial cycle — skipping it can cause the percentage indicator to read inaccurately from the start.
Sony BMS rejecting a third-party NP-FW50 cell on first install
Sony camera bodies run an authentication check when a new cell is inserted. If the BMS doesn't receive the expected response during that first handshake, it can flag the battery as unrecognised even when the cell voltage is correct. This most often happens when the cell is inserted into the body cold and without a prior charge. Placing the battery in the OEM charger first — until the charge indicator shows full — then inserting it into the camera body typically clears the rejection flag. If the error persists after one full OEM charge cycle, try a power cycle: remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, and reinsert.
Battery percentage jumping erratically on the NEX-5 display
This happens when the camera's fuel gauge hasn't yet mapped its voltage-threshold table to the new cell's discharge curve. The OEM firmware calibrates the indicator against a reference discharge profile — a new third-party cell with a slightly different internal resistance can cause the percentage to jump or drop suddenly at certain voltage steps. The fix is to run two full charge-to-depletion cycles through the camera body, not a standalone charger, so the BMS can observe the actual discharge curve of this specific cell. After those two cycles, the indicator typically stabilises and tracks accurately down to the 3.0V per-cell cutoff.

Frequently Asked Questions
My NEX-5 shot count seems lower than expected — is the replacement cell drawing more than it should?
Shot count varies significantly based on how many camera systems are active. On the NEX-5, continuous autofocus, in-body image stabilisation, the EVF, and flash recycling all draw current simultaneously — the rated shot count assumes a standard mix, not continuous use of all four. A session heavy on video or burst shooting will deplete the 1050mAh cell faster than stills-only use. Track your actual draw by checking which camera functions are active rather than comparing raw shot numbers.
The flash on my NEX-5 isn't fully recycling between shots with this new battery — what's causing that?
Flash recycling pulls a short but high-current spike to recharge the capacitor between exposures. If the cell's state of charge is below roughly 50%, internal resistance rises enough that the capacitor recharge current sags, and recycle time extends noticeably. This is normal behaviour tied to cell state, not a fault with the replacement. If you're seeing slow recycle at what appears to be a full charge, run the first-install calibration cycle — charge fully via OEM charger, then discharge fully through the camera body once — to ensure the fuel gauge is reading the actual charge state accurately.
My NEX-5 body gets noticeably warm during extended video recording — is the replacement battery causing this?
The heat during video recording comes primarily from the sensor, image processor, and image stabilisation circuit running simultaneously — not from the battery itself. The NEX-5 body generates more thermal load under sustained video than stills because all three systems draw continuously rather than in short bursts. The battery will also warm slightly under that sustained draw, which is normal for a Li-ion cell operating within its rated current range. If the camera body triggers a temperature warning and shuts down, that's the body's own thermal cutoff protecting the sensor — not a battery fault.
