Li-SOCl2 chemistry is standard for this application — it holds voltage flat across long unattended logging sessions where alkaline cells would sag and distort the low-battery threshold.

The logger's firmware reads cell voltage directly — it does not use a fuel gauge IC — so chemistry and nominal voltage must match the original cell exactly to avoid false low-battery shutdowns.

Why the 175-series logger cuts out when the probe initialises

Logger display shows erratic battery percentage after a cell swap

The 175-series estimates remaining capacity by tracking voltage against a fixed discharge curve — there is no coulomb counter recalibrating in the background. When a new cell is installed, the firmware compares the resting voltage to its stored curve and may place the indicator at a point that does not reflect actual capacity for the first few readings. This typically resolves after one full logging session brings the cell to a stable discharge state. If the percentage reading still jumps between sessions, run a calibration cycle from the instrument menu — the logger resets its voltage-to-capacity mapping at 3.6V nominal during that routine.

Yes, this is a combined-draw issue. The USB transfer circuit and active sensor polling run simultaneously during export, pulling more current than the logger draws during logging alone. An aged or partially discharged Li-SOCl2 cell cannot sustain that combined load without its terminal voltage dipping below the firmware's cutoff threshold. Fit a fresh cell and confirm the instrument is not in an active logging session during the transfer — triggering both loads at once is the worst case for any Li-SOCl2 cell.

My 175-S1 has been sitting unused in a carry case for several months and now won't power on at all — what's happening?

Li-SOCl2 cells develop a passivation layer on the anode during storage, which raises internal resistance and can suppress terminal voltage below the logger's minimum startup threshold. The instrument sees the voltage and refuses to boot — it is not a firmware fault. In many cases, a brief load pulse breaks down the passivation layer and the cell recovers. If the instrument still will not power on after a 30-second press of the power button, the cell has self-discharged below recoverable voltage and needs to be replaced with a fresh 175-SL750 cell.

Temperature readings drift or reset partway through a long logging session — could this be the battery?

This is a voltage dropout issue under sustained sensor load. During a long unattended session, a weakened Li-SOCl2 cell's terminal voltage gradually sags as internal resistance rises, eventually dropping enough to cause the logger's microcontroller to reset or corrupt the active data buffer. The logged data before the dropout is usually intact, but the session appears truncated or shows a gap. Replace the cell before any session expected to run beyond the instrument's rated logging duration, and check the battery indicator reads full after the post-installation calibration cycle before leaving the logger unattended.
