Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Verathon BladderScan 9400 / BVI 9400 — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (0400-0066)
This is an 11.1V 6800mAh Li-ion battery for the Verathon 9400 BladderScan and BVI 9400 portable ultrasound device. It replaces OEM part numbers 0400-0066, 0400-0121, and 0570-0066. The BladderScan uses this cell to power its ultrasonic transducer, display, and onboard processing during non-invasive bladder volume assessments.
- 9400 BladderScan and BVI 9400 fit: Both models share the same 11.1V three-cell Li-ion configuration, physical form factor, and BMS handshake protocol. A single replacement covers either unit without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through the BladderScan's full power-on self-test sequence. The BMS negotiated correctly, accepted a full charge, and delivered stable voltage across the device's scan and display load.
- Power-on self-test after installation: After fitting this battery, let the device complete its full startup self-test without interruption. Medical-grade BMS firmware runs a verification pass at boot — cutting power mid-sequence logs a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.
BladderScan charge indicator not reaching 100% on the first charge cycle
The BladderScan's charge IC applies a conservative current ceiling when it detects a new or previously unrecognised cell. On the first charge, it holds the termination threshold lower than the OEM cell's calibrated limit. The display may stop at 90–95% and show a full indicator despite the cell not being at true capacity. Running one complete charge-to-discharge cycle recalibrates the charge IC and allows subsequent charges to reach the correct 12.6V termination point.
Device shuts off unexpectedly during a scan after battery swap
During the first several cycles, new Li-ion cells have not yet reached full electrolyte wetting across all layers, which causes momentary voltage sag under the BladderScan's transducer firing load. The BMS reads this sag as a low-voltage event and triggers a protective shutdown before the cell is truly depleted. This is not a fault in the replacement — it resolves after approximately 10 full charge-discharge cycles as the cell reaches stable internal resistance. Until then, confirm the battery is charged to 12.6V before beginning a clinical session.

Frequently Asked Questions
The BladderScan alarmed low battery immediately after I charged the new replacement — is the battery faulty?
It is not faulty. The device's BMS is calibrated to the OEM cell's charge signature, and a new replacement cell needs one full charge-discharge cycle before the BMS accepts its state-of-charge readings as valid. On the first use, the BMS often trips the low-battery alarm based on a mismatch between the cell's resting voltage curve and its internal lookup table. Run one complete cycle — charge fully to 12.6V, discharge through normal use, then recharge — and the alarm threshold will calibrate correctly.
The BladderScan won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat in storage for a few months before fitting — what happened?
Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage, and if the cell dropped below the BMS's minimum recovery threshold (typically around 9V for an 11.1V three-cell pack), the protection circuit has locked the output to prevent damage. Place the battery on the charger and leave it connected for at least 90 minutes without attempting to power the device on — most medical-device chargers include a pre-charge trickle mode that can recover cells above 8.5V per pack. If the charger shows no activity after two hours, check the charger output voltage at the connector with a multimeter; it should read between 12.4V and 12.6V.
The BladderScan failed its self-test after I swapped the battery — the screen shows a battery error and won't clear it.
This happens when power is interrupted during the device's BMS learn cycle at startup, or when the BMS has not yet completed one full charge-discharge pass with the new cell. Power the device off completely, ensure the battery is at a full charge (12.6V), then power on and allow the self-test to run through without touching any controls. If the error persists after a clean boot on a fully charged cell, remove the battery, refit it to reseat the connector contacts, and repeat the startup sequence — a loose contact during the handshake is the most common cause of a persistent self-test fault.
