This 7.4V 3500mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Vertex Standard VXD720 portable two-way radio. It fits the VXD720 used across commercial, industrial, and public safety communications. Voltage and capacity match the OEM specification exactly.

  • VXD720 fit: The VXD720 uses a 7.4V two-cell Li-ion architecture with a BMS handshake that must be completed at the charger dock before the charge cycle begins. This pack carries the correct contact layout and BMS profile to complete that handshake without triggering a fault LED.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge-discharge sequences and monitored the BMS under sustained PTT load. The overcurrent protection tripped correctly at the expected threshold and reset cleanly — no latched lockout on normal transmit current draw.
  • First insertion on the VXD720 dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The VXD720 platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging will begin.

Why the VXD720 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

A new Li-ion cell ships at storage voltage — typically around 3.7V per cell, not the full 4.2V. Under the high current draw of a PTT transmit event, a cell at storage voltage can sag below the BMS low-voltage cutoff threshold momentarily. The radio interprets this as a depleted pack and cuts transmission. A full charge cycle before first heavy use brings both cells to 4.2V each and eliminates this sag.

The VXD720 reads battery level using voltage thresholds, not a fuel gauge chip. A new pack at storage voltage sits in a lower threshold band than a fully charged one, so the indicator shows fewer bars than the actual cell condition warrants. This is not a fault with the pack. Charge the battery fully — both cells to 4.2V — and the bar indicator will reflect the correct state.

The VXD720 dock blinks a fault LED every time I insert the new battery — how do I clear it?

The dock fault LED fires when the BMS handshake fails on first contact, usually because the gold contact strip has a thin residue layer or the pack wasn't seated fully. Remove the battery, wipe the contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it with firm, even pressure. If the fault clears and charging begins, the handshake completed — no further action needed.

My VXD720 drops to reduced transmit power partway through a shift even though the battery bar still shows charge — what's happening?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. As the cell capacity decreases through the shift, internal impedance rises and the pack can't maintain the voltage rail under the high current draw of continuous transmission. The bar indicator shows remaining capacity based on resting voltage, but it doesn't reflect the pack's ability to hold that voltage under load. If this happens consistently before the end of a shift, the pack needs a full charge before deployment — not a partial top-up.

The new battery sat in a drawer for several months and the VXD720 dock won't start charging at all — is the pack dead?

Extended storage can drop cell voltage below the dock's acceptance threshold, causing the charger to see the pack as unrecoverable. This is a BMS lockout from deep self-discharge, not a failed cell. Some chargers with a recovery or conditioning mode will trickle charge the pack back above the acceptance threshold — typically around 6.0V total for a 7.4V two-cell pack. Check if your dock has a recovery mode and run it; if not, a compatible charger with trickle-start capability will reinitialise the pack.
