Fits X-Rite 500, 504, 508, 518 spectrophotometers; replaces OEM part SE15-26.
4.8V, 2000mAh Ni-MH pack delivers stable voltage across full measurement cycles without mid-session dropout.
Connector seats into the battery compartment slot with positive contact to the spring terminals on top.
We bench-tested this cell in a 500 unit through ten complete charge-discharge cycles; BMS engaged cleanly at cutoff threshold with no premature lockout.
After installation, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before field deployment — the 500 maps battery state during calibration, and skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

X-Rite 500 Series — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (SE15-26)

This is a 4.8V, 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the X-Rite 500, 504, 508, and 518 spectrophotometers. It uses OEM part number SE15-26 and fits the same battery bay as the original pack. These instruments are used in colour measurement and quality control across printing, textile, and manufacturing environments.

  • 500 series platform compatibility: The 500, 504, 508, and 518 all share the same 4.8V battery architecture, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One battery format covers the full platform.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the instrument's charge and calibration sequence. The BMS accepted the new cells without fault codes, and the charge indicator tracked correctly across full charge and discharge cycles.
  • Calibration cycle before field deployment: After installing this battery, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before taking it into the field. The spectrophotometer maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings during the first measurement session, even with a fully charged pack.

BMS lockout after the X-Rite 500 sat unused in a carry case for months

Ni-MH cells self-discharge even in storage. If a pack sits unused long enough, cell voltage drops below the BMS recovery threshold and the instrument will not recognise the battery at all. The charger may also refuse to begin a charge cycle because the protection circuit sees the pack as a fault condition rather than a depleted cell. To recover, place the pack in a compatible Ni-MH charger that supports a low-voltage trickle recovery mode — typically a 50–100mA pre-charge pulse until cell voltage climbs above 1.0V per cell before full charge begins.

X-Rite 500 shuts down mid-measurement even with a charged battery

The spectrophotometer's measurement head draws a concentrated current pulse each time it fires the illumination source. On an aged or partially discharged Ni-MH pack, that pulse causes a momentary voltage sag that trips the BMS undervoltage cutoff — shutting the instrument down mid-reading. This is not a software fault. A fresh, fully charged cell recovers voltage quickly enough to ride through the spike. If shutdowns persist after a full charge cycle with the new pack, confirm the pack voltage at the battery contacts reads at least 5.4V before the measurement cycle starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

My X-Rite 500 won't start a charge cycle after the battery sat in storage — charger just blinks and stops. What's wrong?

The Ni-MH cells have self-discharged below the threshold the charger uses to detect a valid pack — it reads the low voltage as a fault and refuses to charge. You need a charger with a trickle pre-charge mode that can push 50–100mA into the cells until each cell reaches at least 1.0V before full charge begins. Standard fast chargers will not recover a pack this depleted. Once the pack climbs above that floor, a normal charge cycle will complete without issue.

The X-Rite 500 powers on fine but shuts off every time I transfer data to my PC over USB — why?

USB data transfer runs the instrument's processor and the USB interface simultaneously, adding a combined current draw the BMS treats the same as an illumination spike — if the pack is below roughly 80% charge, the voltage sags enough to trip the cutoff. Charge the battery fully before any USB session and confirm pack voltage reads at least 5.4V at the contacts before connecting. If the shutdowns continue at full charge, check that the USB cable is not also attempting to draw charge current from the instrument, which compounds the load.

Colour readings are drifting and resetting partway through a logging session — could this be the battery?

Yes. Sustained sensor load during a logging session pulls steady current from the pack, and as cell voltage gradually sags, the instrument's internal reference voltage becomes unstable — causing measurement drift or mid-session resets that look like a software or calibration fault. This is a voltage dropout problem, not a calibration problem. Install a fresh, fully charged pack and run the instrument's calibration routine before the session; if readings stabilise, the old pack had insufficient capacity to sustain the sensor load across the full session.
