Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Zodiac PA2099 / PA4099 / PA5099 / PA5499 Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 12V 1100mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Zodiac two-way radios including the PA2099, PA4099, PA5099, and PA5499. It slots into the same battery compartment as the original pack and connects to the same charging contacts. Voltage and chemistry match the OEM specification exactly.
- PA2099 / PA4099 / PA5099 / PA5499 platform fit: These Zodiac models share the same 12V Ni-MH battery format, contact layout, and BMS handshake protocol. One replacement pack covers the full series without adapters or modifications.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and transmit cycles on a Zodiac-series radio. The BMS accepted the dock handshake on first insertion, and voltage held steady under repeated PTT press load spikes throughout testing.
- First-cycle contact check: Ni-MH cells ship at partial charge and the contact strip can carry a fine oxide film from storage. Before first charge, wipe the gold battery contacts with a dry cloth, seat the pack firmly in the dock, and confirm the charge indicator activates — this clears any contact resistance that prevents the dock from reading the pack correctly.
Why the PA2099 cuts out mid-transmission on a freshly charged pack
Ni-MH cells have a steeper voltage sag curve than Li-ion under transmit current spikes. When you press PTT, the radio draws a sharp burst of current that can momentarily pull cell voltage below the BMS low-voltage cutoff threshold — even when the pack reads as fully charged at rest. This is more likely if the pack has been stored discharged for an extended period, as internal impedance rises. A full conditioning cycle — one complete charge followed by normal use to depletion — lowers cell impedance and reduces the sag response.
Bar indicator drops one bar immediately after inserting a new pack
New Ni-MH cells leave the factory at storage voltage, not full charge. The radio reads that resting voltage and maps it to one fewer bar on the indicator — this is normal voltage-threshold behaviour, not a fault with the pack. Place the battery in the charger dock before use and let it complete a full charge cycle. Once the dock confirms charge complete and the pack reaches rated voltage, the bar indicator will reflect actual capacity correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Zodiac PA2099 charger dock blinks a fault light after I insert the new battery — it never starts charging. What's wrong?
This happens when the pack voltage is below the dock's acceptance threshold, which is common on batteries shipped in storage state. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and firmly reseat it — a poor contact reads the same as an undervoltage condition to the dock. If the fault light persists, check resting voltage across the contacts with a multimeter; the pack needs to read at least 10V for most Ni-MH docks to begin a charge cycle.
The radio cuts out mid-transmission after a few hours of use — the battery felt fully charged when the shift started. Is the pack failing?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a dead pack. Ni-MH cells lose voltage faster than Li-ion during repeated high-current PTT bursts, and the BMS trips if voltage dips below its cutoff threshold. Run one full conditioning cycle — charge to completion, use until the radio shuts down, then recharge fully — this reduces cell impedance and tightens the voltage response under transmit load.
After the radio sat unused for two weeks with this battery installed, it won't power on at all — the dock shows no activity either.
Ni-MH packs self-discharge faster than Li-ion, and two weeks of standby inside a radio can pull cell voltage below the BMS recovery threshold, triggering a lockout. Remove the pack from the radio and connect it directly to the dock charger outside the device — some docks have a recovery or trickle mode that activates only when the pack is inserted alone. If the dock begins a trickle charge, let it run to completion; voltage should recover above 10.8V and the BMS will re-initialise normally.
