The Satfinder 3HD powers on and scans fine, but the signal reading resets or jumps partway through a logging session — could the battery be causing this?

Yes. Under sustained load from the RF module, display, and active logging together, a degraded pack can drop voltage briefly without triggering a full shutdown. That transient dropout is enough to cause the instrument's processor to reset its measurement state mid-session. The symptom looks like a software glitch but the root cause is voltage sag under combined draw. A replacement pack rated at the correct 7.4V and 2600mAh eliminates the sag and keeps the logging session stable.

The Satfinder 3HD powers on after I fit the new battery, but the battery percentage jumps around between reboots — is the battery faulty?

It is not faulty. The meter's charge indicator recalibrates its voltage-to-percentage mapping to the new cell during the first few cycles. Until that mapping settles, the displayed percentage can read inconsistently across reboots.
