Panasonic AG3 / AGEZ Series — 6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (VW-VBS1)
This is a 6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Panasonic AG3 and compatible camcorders. It fits a broad range of Panasonic camcorder models including the AGBP15, AGEZ1U, and AGEZ20. Cross-compatible OEM part numbers include VW-VBS1, VW-VBS1E, and VW-VBS2E.
- AG3 and AGEZ series fit: These models share the same 6V battery rail, physical connector, and BMS handshake protocol. A single cell format covers the full range, so the same replacement works across the AG3, AGEZ1U, and AGEZ20 without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a Panasonic camcorder body. The BMS accepted the cell on the first charge cycle and reported a stable voltage throughout discharge. No false low-battery flags appeared under standard recording load.

Why the AG3 shows a dead-battery indicator on a new replacement cell
The AG3's battery indicator maps voltage thresholds to charge-remaining estimates that were calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. A new Ni-MH cell — especially one that arrived partially discharged — sits at a resting voltage the camera's BMS may read as empty. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. One full charge cycle from within the camera body resets the BMS reference and clears the false indicator.
Battery percentage jumping erratically during playback or recording
Ni-MH cells have a flatter discharge curve than Li-ion, and the AG3's indicator was tuned to that flat curve on a cell it already knows. A replacement cell with a slightly different internal resistance will produce voltage readings that don't map cleanly to the camera's percentage thresholds. The result is a gauge that drops suddenly or bounces between readings. Complete two full charge-discharge cycles in the camcorder body and the BMS recalibrates — the display stabilises at that point.

My AG3 shows a full-battery icon and then drops to empty within a few minutes of recording — is the replacement cell faulty?
This is almost always a BMS calibration issue, not a faulty cell. The camcorder's battery indicator maps voltage levels against a discharge curve it learned from the original cell — a new Ni-MH cell looks unfamiliar until it's been cycled. Run one full charge through the OEM charger or camera body, then discharge fully during normal use. After one complete cycle, the indicator reading stabilises.
The AG3 won't recognise the replacement battery at all — the camera shows no battery or powers off immediately on insertion.
This happens when the cell arrives in deep partial discharge after storage, and the camera's BMS reads the voltage as below its acceptance floor. Place the cell in the OEM charger for a full charge before inserting it into the camera body. If the charger accepts it, let it complete the full cycle — resting voltage after charge should sit at approximately 7.2V across the pack. Insert into the camera after the charger indicates completion.
Cold weather seems to drain my AG3 battery much faster than normal — is there a problem with the replacement cell?
Ni-MH cells lose effective capacity in cold conditions because electrochemical reaction rates slow at lower temperatures — this affects all Ni-MH cells, not just replacements. Below 10°C, available capacity can drop noticeably compared to room-temperature performance. Keep the battery in an inside pocket until you're ready to shoot, and avoid leaving the camcorder idle in the cold between takes. Capacity recovers when the cell warms back up to normal operating temperature.
