Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex FNB-Z182 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This is a 7.4V, 1800mAh Li-ion battery that replaces the Vertex FNB-Z182 and FNB-Z182ZI packs used in compatible Vertex portable two-way radios. It ships at storage voltage — not full charge — which is normal for Li-ion transport. Capacity is 13.32Wh.
- FNB-Z182 and FNB-Z182ZI compatibility: Both OEM part numbers share the same 7.4V cell configuration, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — so this single replacement covers both variants without any modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit-load draws to confirm the BMS holds above the undervoltage cutoff threshold during sustained PTT bursts. The cell balance stayed within spec across the test cycle.
- First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly. Vertex charger docks require a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging can begin.
Why a new FNB-Z182 pack triggers the dock fault LED on first insertion
Li-ion packs ship at roughly 3.6–3.7V per cell — below the voltage threshold Vertex charger docks expect to see before they begin a charge cycle. If the dock reads a voltage below its acceptance window, it flags a fault rather than starting the charge. This is not a defective battery. A full reseat after wiping the contacts usually clears it; if not, leaving the pack in the dock for 60 seconds allows the BMS to signal the charger and initiate trickle acceptance.
Radio cuts out completely when PTT is pressed — new battery installed
Transmitting draws a sharp current spike — often 1.5A or more — that a new, uncharged pack at storage voltage can trigger as an overcurrent event in the BMS. The BMS trips the circuit to protect the cells, and the radio drops off mid-transmission. Charge the pack to full before the first shift; at 8.4V (full charge for a 7.4V Li-ion), the BMS overcurrent threshold has enough headroom to handle normal PTT load without tripping.

Frequently Asked Questions
The dock light blinks red and never switches to charging — why won't it accept the new FNB-Z182?
The pack ships at storage voltage, typically around 7.2–7.4V, which sits below the acceptance threshold most Vertex docks require to start a charge cycle. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly — the dock needs a clean contact to read the BMS signal. If the fault LED persists, leave the pack seated for 60 seconds; the BMS will attempt to handshake and pull the dock into trickle-charge mode at that point.
My radio drops to noticeably weaker transmission mid-shift — is the battery faulty or is this a radio issue?
This is voltage sag under sustained RF output load, not a faulty pack. As the cells discharge, internal resistance rises and the voltage delivered under transmit load drops below the radio's threshold for full TX power — the radio steps down automatically to protect the output stage. It is not a BMS trip; the radio stays on but reduces power. Keep the pack charged above the halfway point during long shifts to stay above the sag threshold, and run a full charge cycle before any shift that involves heavy transmission.
The bar indicator on the radio shows one fewer bar than expected straight after charging — is the capacity wrong?
The bar indicator on Vertex portables reads voltage at rest, not capacity. A freshly charged FNB-Z182 sitting idle for 20–30 minutes will show a small voltage drop as the cells settle from surface charge — this is normal Li-ion behaviour and does not mean the pack is underperforming. The indicator will read correctly once the resting voltage stabilises, usually within half an hour of removing the pack from the dock. Check resting voltage at the contacts — a full 7.4V Li-ion pack should read 8.2–8.4V at rest.
