Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Symbol PDT3500 / PDT3540 Series — 6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (21-14969-02)
This is a 6V, 1600mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Symbol PDT3500, PDT3510, and PDT3540 handheld barcode scanners. It slots into the same battery bay as the original pack and uses the same connector and contact layout. Capacity matches the OEM spec at 1600mAh (9.6Wh).
- PDT3500, PDT3510, PDT3540 fitment: These three models share the same battery housing dimensions, contact pitch, and 6V power rail. The BMS on each expects a Ni-MH pack — a different chemistry will either fail to charge or trigger a fault on the dock.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a PDT3500-class unit. The BMS accepted the pack without a fault flag, contact resistance sat within spec, and cell voltage held steady across the full discharge curve.
- First-shift prep for pick-and-pack environments: Place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before the first shift. Scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum voltage, and a pre-charged pack prevents false BMS trips when the trigger is hammered at the start of a shift.
Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack
A new Ni-MH pack that ships at low state of charge can confuse some Symbol charging cradles into displaying a fault. The dock reads the initial cell voltage and, if it falls outside the expected window, it flags an error rather than starting a charge cycle. Wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the cradle with a dry cloth, reseat the scanner firmly, and wait 60 seconds — the dock re-samples cell voltage after a short delay. If the fault clears and charging begins, the contacts were the issue; if not, check that the cradle firmware supports the PDT3500 series.
Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts
During a fast scan sequence, the radio transmitter and the laser or imager fire almost simultaneously, creating a combined inrush draw that can drag cell voltage below the radio module's minimum threshold. When that happens, the wireless link drops mid-burst and the scanner has to re-associate — which operators see as a freeze or missed scan. This is more common with an aged pack but can also occur with a new cell that hasn't completed its first full charge cycle. Charge the pack fully before use and, if the drops persist, check that the cradle is delivering a complete charge and not cutting off early due to a contact issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
My PDT3500 won't read barcodes after I swapped the battery — laser fires but nothing registers
The laser or imager needs a minimum voltage to fire at full power and drive the decode engine. If the new pack shipped at a low state of charge, the cell voltage may be too low to sustain a clean decode even though the scanner appears to power on. Put the scanner in the cradle for a full charge cycle first. Once the pack reaches full charge, the scan trigger inrush drops and the laser output stabilises — most read failures clear at or above 6.0V.
The scanner runs warm after a long shift — is that a problem with this pack?
Sustained scanning plus continuous wireless polling generates steady draw through the pack, and Ni-MH cells do produce more heat than Li-ion under that load pattern. Some warmth is normal. If the housing becomes uncomfortable to hold or the scanner starts throttling scan speed, the pack is likely being pushed harder than the original — check that the wireless polling interval in your MDM software isn't set more aggressively than needed. Reducing poll frequency lowers the combined draw and keeps cell temperature in range.
New battery, but the shift endurance is noticeably shorter than our old packs — what's causing it?
Ni-MH cells need two or three full charge-discharge cycles to reach rated capacity — a pack used straight out of the box will underperform until it's conditioned. Run the scanner until the low-battery warning triggers, return it to the cradle for a full charge, and repeat that cycle twice before judging capacity. If endurance is still short after three full cycles, measure resting cell voltage after a full charge — it should sit at or above 7.2V across the pack; anything lower points to a cell that didn't form correctly.
