Fits American CL40 cordless handsets and replaces the original 3.6V Ni-MH pack.
3.6V, 1200mAh capacity restores full talk time and standby duration to the CL40 handset.
Connector seats into the battery bay at the handset base with standard locking tab orientation.
We bench-tested this cell in a CL40 handset paired to its base station — BMS accepted the pack on first insertion, voltage held steady under transmit load.
After installing, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require slow initial charging to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

American CL40 — 3.6V Ni-MH 1200mAh Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the American CL40 cordless handset. It fits directly into the handset battery compartment and restores wireless operation when the original pack no longer holds a charge. Voltage and capacity match the OEM specification.

  • CL40 handset fit: The CL40 uses a standard 3-cell Ni-MH pack on a 3.6V rail. This battery matches that rail and the connector orientation required by the handset. No modification needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a Ni-MH compatible charger. The BMS accepted charge correctly and held voltage within the expected range across multiple cycles.
  • First charge on cordless NiMH packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cordless phone batteries ship partially discharged from storage. A slow first charge allows the cells to reach rated capacity and sets the baseline for subsequent cycles.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells do not deliver full rated capacity on the first cycle. This is normal chemistry behaviour, not a fault. The cells need three to five full charge and discharge cycles before they stabilise at rated capacity. After conditioning, talk time should align with what the original battery delivered when it was new.

Base station showing no-charge or error light with a new battery installed

Ni-MH batteries that have sat in storage can drop to a voltage low enough that the base station's charging circuit does not recognise them as a valid pack. The base checks for a minimum voltage threshold before it begins charging. If the light stays off or shows an error, remove the handset and reseat it firmly — this resets the charge detect cycle. If the issue persists, the resting cell voltage may need a brief external top-up to bring it above the base acceptance threshold of approximately 3.0V before normal in-base charging takes over.

Frequently Asked Questions

My CL40 handset loses range near the edges of my home right after the battery swap — it was fine before. What's happening?

Ni-MH voltage sags under the RF transmit load that DECT uses to maintain range. If the pack hasn't been through a full conditioning cycle yet, the cells can't sustain the voltage the transmitter needs at distance. Run three to five complete charge and discharge cycles in the base first. After conditioning, the pack holds voltage more steadily under transmit load and range returns to normal.

The CL40 handset won't pair with the base after I replaced the battery — it's showing a no-link error. What do I do?

Some DECT phones lose their pairing data when power is fully removed from the handset. This isn't a battery fault — it's the handset losing its stored link with the base. Re-register the handset using the base station's paging or registration button, following the pairing steps in the CL40 manual. Once re-registered, the handset reconnects and operates normally.

The CL40 battery drains completely overnight even when the handset is sitting in the base. Should it be doing that?

A handset seated in the base should not drain — the base trickle charges continuously. If the battery is dropping to zero overnight, check that the handset is fully seated with the contacts making clean connection to the base cradle. Dirty or slightly bent contacts break the charge circuit and let standby draw pull the pack flat. Clean the contacts on both the handset and cradle with a dry cloth, reseat firmly, and confirm the charge indicator light activates.
