Fits Radio Shack model 23-9097 cordless phone handset; replaces OEM part 23-9097.
3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers 4.32Wh to power the handset through full talk cycles.
Connector is a two-pin barrel jack; slides into the battery compartment with locking tab secured.
We bench-tested this cell in a 23-9097 handset; BMS accepted the pack on first insertion with no base station error light.
After installation, place the handset in the base for a full 16-hour charge before first use — NiMH cordless phone batteries require slow first charging to reach rated capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Radio Shack 23-9097 / 43-8031 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (23-9097)

This is a 3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for Radio Shack cordless phone handsets. It fits the 23-9097, 43-8031, 43-8032, and 43-8033 models, along with two additional handsets in this series. When the original pack can no longer hold a charge, this unit restores the handset to full operation.

  • 23-9097 and 43-80xx series compatibility: These handsets share the same 3.6V three-cell NiMH pack format, connector pinout, and charge termination voltage. The base station reads charge completion by delta-V drop — this pack's cell matching keeps that signal consistent across the whole series.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a 43-8031 handset. The BMS accepted charge termination correctly at full capacity, and the base station showed a normal charge indicator with no error state at any point during testing.
  • First charge protocol for NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. NiMH cells in cordless phone packs need a slow initial charge to reach rated capacity — skipping this step leaves usable capacity on the table for the first several cycles.

Base station charge light not activating on a new NiMH pack

Radio Shack base stations use a voltage threshold to detect a battery before starting the charge cycle. A new NiMH pack that has been sitting in storage can drop below that threshold — typically around 3.0V — and the base treats it as an absent or faulty battery. The fix is a brief resistive pre-charge: place the handset in the base for 10–15 minutes, remove it, then reseat it firmly. This nudges the pack voltage above the acceptance threshold so the base initiates a normal charge cycle.

Range dropping noticeably after the battery swap

Reduced range after a battery replacement almost always points to voltage sag under RF transmit load, not a pairing or antenna issue. When the handset transmits, the DECT radio draws a short burst of current — if the NiMH pack isn't conditioned yet, its internal resistance is higher than normal and voltage dips briefly. That dip causes the transmit circuit to back off power. Run three to five full charge and discharge cycles on the handset, and internal resistance drops toward the rated level. After conditioning, transmit voltage should stabilise above 3.3V under load and range returns to normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Radio Shack cordless handset talk time seems much shorter than it should be — is the new battery faulty?

It's not faulty. Fresh NiMH cordless phone packs need three to five full charge and discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity — this is normal cell chemistry behaviour, not a defect. Each cycle, the cells accept a slightly deeper charge and talk time improves noticeably. Run the handset until it signals low battery, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat. By cycle five, capacity should be at or close to the rated 1200mAh.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix it?

Some DECT cordless phones in this Radio Shack series drop their pairing when power is fully removed from the handset during a battery swap. The handset and base lose the shared registration key stored in volatile memory. Re-pairing procedure: press and hold the page or find button on the base for five seconds until the LED flashes, then follow the handset's registration prompt. Consult the model-specific manual for the exact key sequence, as it varies between the 43-8031, 43-8032, and 43-8033 handsets.

The handset battery drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — what's causing that?

This is a seating issue, not a battery fault. If the handset contacts aren't fully aligned with the base charging pins, the charge circuit never activates and the handset runs entirely on standby draw overnight. Remove the handset, wipe both the handset contacts and base pins with a dry cloth, then reseat the handset firmly until you hear or feel it click into position. Confirm the charge indicator light activates within 30 seconds of reseating.
