This is a 2.4V, 650mAh Ni-MH battery pack for Universum CL15 and SL15 cordless phone handsets. It replaces the original cell when talk time or standby duration has noticeably dropped. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec exactly.

  • CL15 and SL15 handset fit: Both models share the same handset chassis, connector orientation, and 2.4V charging circuit. One battery covers both variants without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the CL15 base station cradle and confirmed the BMS accepted charge normally, voltage climbed cleanly to 2.8V at full charge, and the handset registered full signal bars throughout.
  • First charge after installation: After fitting this battery, seat the handset in the base cradle and leave it for a full 16 hours before use. Ni-MH cells shipped in storage state need a slow, uninterrupted initial charge to reach rated 650mAh capacity — cutting it short leaves the pack under-conditioned for the first several cycles.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells commonly deliver below-rated capacity for the first three to five charge cycles. This is a chemistry characteristic, not a fault — the cells need repeated charge and discharge passes to reach full electrochemical capacity. Each full cycle adds usable capacity until the pack stabilises near its rated 650mAh. Run the handset until it signals low battery, then return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat this three to five times before judging performance.

Base station not charging the handset after battery swap

Ni-MH batteries discharged deeply during storage can present a voltage low enough that the base station's charging circuit refuses to engage — a protection threshold built into the base, not the battery. The fix is to let the handset sit in the cradle for up to 30 minutes undisturbed; most CL15 base stations trickle a small recovery current before switching to normal charge mode. If the charge indicator still doesn't light, remove the handset, wait 60 seconds, and reseat it firmly — poor cradle contact is the other common cause. Once the base accepts the pack, let it complete a full uninterrupted charge to 2.8V before use.

My Universum CL15 range dropped significantly after I put in the new battery — is something wrong with it?

Range reduction after a battery swap on the CL15 is almost always a voltage issue, not a hardware fault. When a Ni-MH pack hasn't completed its conditioning cycles, voltage sags under the RF transmit load, and the handset pulls back its signal strength to compensate. Run three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles and the range will stabilise as the pack builds capacity toward its rated 650mAh. Check that the handset is fully seated in the base cradle during each charge — a loose contact slows the conditioning process.

My CL15 handset lost its pairing with the base after I replaced the battery — how do I get it back?

Some DECT cordless phones drop their pairing registration when the handset power is fully interrupted during a battery change. The CL15 stores pairing data in volatile memory that resets on power loss. Re-register the handset using the pairing or registration button on the base station — on most Universum CL15 bases, press and hold the registration button for three seconds until the indicator flashes, then follow the handset menu to re-pair. You do not need a new battery or a reset of the base to fix this.

The CL15 handset battery drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — what's causing that?

This points to a seating or contact issue rather than a battery fault. If the handset isn't fully clicked into the cradle, the charging pins don't make consistent contact and the base supplies no charge while the handset's standby circuit slowly draws the pack down. Remove the handset, check the cradle contacts and the battery terminals for debris or corrosion, then reseat the handset until you hear or feel it click into position. The charge indicator light on the base should illuminate within a few seconds of correct seating.
