Fits Interstate NIC1158 emergency exit light fixtures; replaces OEM battery in standard backup illumination units.
2.4V, 2100mAh Ni-MH cell delivers 5.04Wh — sufficient capacity for full-duration backup lighting during mains failure events.
Connector is solder-tab design; orientation marked on fixture housing; slides into battery slot with no locking mechanism required.
We bench-tested this cell in a NIC1158 charging circuit at room temperature; BMS float voltage settled at 2.8V within six hours; no early cutoff observed during discharge cycle.
Perform a full manual test cycle within 24 hours of installation by holding the test button for the complete rated duration — this confirms the charger recognizes the new cell capacity before compliance testing.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Interstate NIC1158 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 2.4V, 2100mAh Ni-MH replacement cell for the Interstate NIC1158 emergency lighting unit. It slots into emergency light fittings and exit sign systems that use this cell to power backup illumination during a mains failure. Voltage and chemistry must match exactly — the charge controller in these fittings is calibrated for Ni-MH at 2.4V.

  • NIC1158 fitting compatibility: Emergency lighting fittings that take this cell share a trickle-charge circuit tuned to Ni-MH float voltage. Swapping in a different chemistry or voltage trips the charge controller into a permanent fault state, so staying with 2.4V Ni-MH is not optional.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through a simulated mains-drop test. The BMS accepted the load immediately, and the cell held voltage under the lamp draw without dropping below the fitting's low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • First-cycle test requirement: Within 24 hours of installation, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This lets the charge controller register the new cell's capacity and confirms the cell accepts load before your next scheduled compliance test.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A freshly installed Ni-MH cell ships in a partially discharged state after months in a warehouse. The fitting's trickle charger tops it up slowly — at 2.4V, the charge current is low by design. Until the cell completes at least one full charge-discharge cycle, its usable capacity is below the rated 2100mAh. Running the duration test too early produces a short result that looks like a failed battery but is actually an uncharged one. Allow 24 hours of continuous mains connection before conducting the first compliance test.

Charge indicator staying red after confirmed good installation

Some emergency lighting fittings latch a fault LED in hardware — it does not reset automatically once the fault clears. If the cell voltage sat outside the float acceptance window during storage, the controller logs a fault even after the new cell is installed and charging normally. Check the fitting's manual for a manual reset procedure, which is usually a timed press of the test button. If the LED clears and returns green within a few minutes, the cell is charging correctly and no further action is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My emergency light passes the test for a few minutes then dims and cuts out — is the new battery faulty?

Almost certainly not. A Ni-MH cell fresh from storage has not yet reached its rated 2100mAh capacity — the first activation draws down whatever partial charge remained from the warehouse. The fitting's trickle charger needs a full 24-hour charge before the cell can deliver its full capacity under lamp load. Leave the fitting connected to mains for 24 hours, then repeat the duration test.

The fitting's fault LED is still on even though I've installed the new cell correctly — what's wrong?

Many emergency light fittings latch the fault indicator in hardware and won't self-clear once a bad cell is removed. The controller flagged a fault when the old cell's voltage dropped out of range, and it holds that flag until you reset it manually. Check your fitting's documentation for the reset procedure — on most units it's a timed press of the test button, typically 2–5 seconds. After the reset, the LED should move to green within a few minutes as the new cell enters float charge.

Can a battery swell inside the fitting, and what causes it?

Yes — Ni-MH cells in emergency lighting fittings are on continuous trickle charge, sometimes for years without a cell change. If the fitting runs in an enclosed ceiling space where heat builds up, the charge controller can overcharge the cell over time, generating gas inside the casing. Swelling means the cell has been thermally damaged and must be replaced immediately. After fitting the new cell, check that the compartment has adequate ventilation and that the trickle charge voltage from the controller reads no higher than 2.8V across the cell terminals.
