This is a 14.4V, 4000mAh Ni-CD replacement battery for the Lithonia ELB 1444N emergency lighting unit. It slots into the fitting to restore backup illumination during mains failure. Capacity is 4000mAh (57.6Wh), matching the original cell specification.

  • ELB 1444N compatibility: The ELB 1444N charge controller expects a specific Ni-CD cell voltage curve and a 14.4V nominal pack to complete its float charge handshake. Swapping chemistry or voltage breaks that cycle and trips a permanent fault LED.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack on the ELB 1444N charge circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell voltage on first connection, progressed from bulk charge to float within the expected window, and drove the load lamps at full rated output.
  • First-cycle test requirement: Within 24 hours of installation, hold the test button for the full rated test duration. This lets the charge controller register the new cell capacity before any scheduled compliance inspection. Skipping this step can cause a false fail on the duration test.

The fix is to leave the fitting powered for 12 to 24 hours. If the indicator has not moved to green by then, measure pack voltage directly at the connector; it should read above 14.0V before the controller accepts it.

Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement

A fresh Ni-CD cell does not deliver rated capacity on the first discharge. The cell chemistry requires at least one full charge-discharge cycle before it reaches the 4000mAh figure. If a compliance test runs before that conditioning cycle, the lamp output drops early and the unit fails the required duration. Run a manual test cycle immediately after installation, allow the pack to fully recharge — 24 hours minimum — and only then schedule the formal compliance test. Voltage at end of charge should stabilise at 16.2V to 17.0V across the pack before you sign it off.

Not faulty — the Ni-CD cell ships partially discharged and needs one full charge-discharge cycle before it delivers its rated 4000mAh. On the first activation, output drops earlier than it will after conditioning. Let the unit charge for a full 24 hours after that first test, then run the test again. Voltage at the battery terminals should hold above 12.0V for the first half of the test duration on the second cycle.

The fitting still shows a fault LED even though the new battery is correctly installed and wired — what is causing this?

Several Lithonia ELB fittings latch the fault LED in firmware and will not self-clear after a battery swap. The controller needs a manual reset: disconnect mains power, wait 30 seconds for the capacitors to drain, then reconnect. If the LED clears and then returns within a few hours, measure pack voltage at the connector — it needs to read at least 13.8V for the charge circuit to exit fault mode.

The old battery in my ELB 1444N had visibly swollen and was stuck in the fitting — what caused that and will it happen again?

Swelling in Ni-CD packs fitted to emergency lights is almost always caused by years of continuous trickle charge at elevated ambient temperature inside the fitting. The charge controller maintains a float current permanently, and if the fitting runs hot — typically above 35°C — that trickle becomes an overcharge over time, generating gas inside the cells. Mount the replacement away from heat sources where possible, and confirm the fitting's charge termination voltage does not exceed 17.0V across the 14.4V pack, which is the safe upper limit for this cell count.
