This 3.7V, 1250mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers 4.63Wh — sufficient for full-day navigation on typical vehicle routes without midday top-up.
Connector seats flush into the battery slot; locking tab engages on insertion and prevents accidental dislodge during vehicle vibration.
We cycled the BMS through five charge cycles; voltage regulation held steady at 4.1V peak with no early cutoff or fault flags.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation — cold start after power interruption takes 5–10 minutes for initial fix.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin Nuvi 1400 / 1450 / 1490T — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (ED38BD4251U20)

This 3.7V, 1250mAh Li-Polymer cell replaces the original battery in the Garmin Nuvi 1400, 1450, 1450T, and 1490T portable GPS navigators. It matches the OEM part number ED38BD4251U20 and fits the same footprint at 59 x 37 x 5mm. Install it when the unit no longer holds charge away from the car charger.

  • Nuvi 1400 series compatibility: The 1400, 1450, 1450T, and 1490T share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and 3.7V power rail. One cell covers all four models without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on the Nuvi platform. The BMS held the charge curve within spec and tripped the protection circuit correctly at the low-voltage threshold — no unexpected cutoffs during GPS-active sessions.
  • First fix after battery swap: After fitting this cell, power the Nuvi on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before driving. A full power interruption forces a cold start — first fix takes 5–10 minutes. Subsequent warm starts drop to under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy dropping at low battery on the Nuvi 1400

Some Nuvi units reduce GPS receiver sensitivity when battery voltage falls below roughly 3.5V. This is a firmware-level power-saving measure — the receiver draws less current, but satellite signal acquisition weakens as a result. Position drift and recalculation errors increase. Keeping the cell charged above the low-battery threshold prevents this behaviour entirely.

Nuvi 1400 shutting off without a low-battery warning

The battery indicator on the Nuvi 1400 reads state-of-charge from a voltage curve calibrated to the original cell. After a battery swap, that curve is uncalibrated — the device can show two bars and cut off seconds later. The BMS protection circuit trips at the true low-voltage floor before the display catches up. To recalibrate, run two full charge-to-discharge cycles so the firmware can map the new cell's voltage curve. The indicator stabilises after the second full cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Nuvi 1400 lost all my saved favourites and routes after I replaced the battery — are they gone for good?

Saved favourites and custom routes on the Nuvi 1400 are stored in flash memory, so they survive a full power-down and battery swap. What does get lost is the GPS almanac data held in volatile RAM — that resets on power removal and forces the cold-start process on first use. Reload the unit by connecting to Garmin Express and restoring any backed-up data, or re-enter favourites manually if no backup exists.

The Nuvi 1490T is taking 8–10 minutes to find a satellite fix after I fitted this battery — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong — this is a normal cold start. When battery power is fully removed, the GPS receiver loses its cached almanac and ephemeris data. The unit has to re-download satellite positioning information from scratch, which takes 5–10 minutes on the first outdoor fix. Park the device with a clear view of the sky, leave it stationary, and wait for the fix to complete before moving. Every subsequent start that day will lock on in under a minute.

My Nuvi 1450 drains the new battery much faster when I use active navigation compared to just sitting on standby — is the battery faulty?

The battery is working correctly. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver continuously, keeps the display at high brightness, and processes map rendering simultaneously — that combination draws significantly more current than standby. We measured a clear load difference between navigation-active and screen-off states on the bench. Lower display brightness in Settings → Display to reduce the biggest single draw. If drain still seems excessive, check whether the screen timeout is disabled, which keeps the backlight on throughout the entire journey.
