Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Trimble Geo Explorer 2 / Pro XL — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (17466)

This is a 12V 1800mAh Ni-MH battery for the Trimble Geo Explorer 2, Geo Explorer II, Pro XL, and Pro XR handheld GPS units. These are field-use surveying and mapping devices that rely on continuous power for satellite positioning and data logging. It replaces OEM part number 17466 directly.

  • Geo Explorer 2 and Pro XL platform: These models share the same 12V battery bay, connector pinout, and charge management circuit. One cell fits across the full group — swapping between units in the same fleet is straightforward.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through a full charge and load discharge on the Geo Explorer 2 platform. The charge circuit accepted the cell without fault flags, and the BMS responded correctly to end-of-charge termination via delta-V detection.
  • Cold-start behaviour after battery swap: After fitting this cell, power the unit on outdoors and let it acquire a satellite fix before starting any fieldwork. GPS units perform a cold start after full power removal — first fix after a swap typically takes 5 to 10 minutes, versus under a minute for subsequent warm starts. This is normal GPS behaviour, not a battery fault.

GPS accuracy reduced when the Geo Explorer 2 is running low on charge

Some GPS receivers step down radio sensitivity at low battery to reduce current draw and extend operation. On the Geo Explorer 2, this can show as position drift or wider error circles before the low-battery warning appears. The receiver is still tracking satellites, but signal processing headroom is reduced. Keep the cell above 30% charge during active mapping sessions to avoid this.

Unit shuts off without warning mid-session

After a long period of use, the original battery's capacity fades while the fuel gauge calibration stays fixed to original values. The unit reads 30% remaining but the actual usable charge cuts off far sooner. A new cell resets this mismatch, but the gauge needs a full charge-discharge cycle to recalibrate. Run the unit from 100% to automatic shutoff once, then charge fully — the indicator will track accurately from that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Geo Explorer 2 lost all my collected data points after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes, and it is a known behaviour with this platform. The Geo Explorer 2 stores active session data in battery-backed RAM, which loses power the moment the old cell is removed. Any unsaved data points or routes held in volatile memory are cleared instantly. Before pulling the battery, sync or export your data to a connected PC or internal flash storage using Trimble's data transfer software.

The Geo Explorer 2 took over eight minutes to get a satellite fix after I fitted the new battery — something wrong with the cell?

Nothing is wrong with the battery. After full power removal, the GPS receiver loses its stored almanac and ephemeris data, which forces a cold start. Cold starts on the Geo Explorer 2 platform typically take 5 to 10 minutes to acquire a full constellation lock, especially in open sky. Subsequent power cycles use cached satellite data and lock in under a minute. Stand outdoors with a clear view of the sky and let the unit finish its first fix before beginning fieldwork.

My new battery drains noticeably faster when I am actively navigating than when the unit is just sitting on standby — is this a fault?

It is not a fault. Active navigation runs the GPS receiver at full polling rate and keeps the display lit — together these draw significantly more current than standby mode, where the receiver duty-cycles and the screen dims or blanks. The 1800mAh capacity is rated under controlled conditions, not continuous full-load operation. Reducing screen brightness during fieldwork is the single most effective step to extend operating time between charges.
