The JS40 is the OEM-spec battery for the Motorola Moto Z3 Play, including variants XT1929-1, XT1929-5, and XT1929-8. It runs at 3.8V with 2800mAh (10.64Wh) of capacity using Li-Polymer chemistry. This cell fits directly into the Z3 Play chassis and connects to the phone's charge IC and fuel gauge IC through the original flex connector.
- Z3 Play variant compatibility: The XT1929 series shares the same battery bay dimensions, flex connector pinout, and BMS handshake across all regional variants. Swapping carrier or regional models does not change the battery requirement — all use the JS40 footprint and the same 3.8V nominal rail.

Why the Moto Z3 Play shuts down suddenly at 20–30% after a battery swap
This happens because the fuel gauge IC still holds the discharge curve from the old, degraded cell. When the new cell reaches a voltage point that the old curve mapped to 20–30%, the IC treats it as a valid low-battery reading and lets the OS trigger shutdown. Under modem or display load, voltage sag on a freshly installed cell can also push the rail briefly below the cutoff threshold before the IC updates. One full discharge to near-zero followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% rewrites the curve. After that cycle, the percentage readings stabilise and load-triggered shutdowns stop.
USB-PD fast charge not activating on the Z3 Play after cell replacement
On the first charge cycle after a cell swap, the Z3 Play's charge IC sometimes falls back to standard 5V charging instead of negotiating the TurboPower protocol. The BMS on a new cell starts with conservative current limits until it has completed one charge cycle and confirmed cell health. Forcing fast charge into an uncalibrated cell can also cause the IC to flag a fault and drop back to trickle rate. Let the first full charge complete at standard rate — fast charging typically resumes normally from the second cycle onward.

The phone won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months before I installed it — what's wrong?
Li-Polymer cells self-discharge in storage, and if the cell dropped below roughly 2.5V the BMS will have locked out to prevent damage, blocking normal boot. Plug the phone into a wall charger — not a USB port — and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button. The charge IC will trickle current into the locked-out cell until the BMS re-initialises above the recovery threshold, at which point the phone will boot normally.
The battery percentage is jumping around erratically — it reads 60%, then suddenly 45%, then back to 55% within minutes of unplugging.
Erratic percentage jumps after a cell swap mean the fuel gauge IC is still mid-recalibration against the new cell's impedance profile. The coulomb counter loses accuracy when cell internal resistance changes significantly from what it last measured — which it always does on a fresh cell. Don't rely on the percentage until you've completed one full discharge-charge cycle at standard rate with fast charging off. After that cycle the IC locks onto the correct curve and the readings stabilise.
