My S340-13IML shows the new battery as 0% and won't charge — is the cell dead on arrival?

It is almost always an EEPROM mismatch, not a failed cell. The BIOS compares the new cell's embedded data against what it logged for the old battery and stalls the charge controller when they differ. Plug in the adapter, leave the laptop closed for 20 minutes, then do a full shutdown and cold boot — this lets the SMBus re-poll the cell. If the reading is still stuck at 0%, hold the power button for 30 seconds with the adapter removed, then reconnect and boot.

The fuel gauge reads wildly different percentages every time I wake the S340-13IML — jumps from 60% to 90% between sessions.

The fuel gauge IC calibrates its state-of-charge model against discharge data it collects over time. After a cell swap, it has no logged curve for the new chemistry, so readings are erratic for the first two to three cycles. My replacement cell is reporting 38Wh in Lenovo Vantage but the spec says 42.62Wh — is something wrong?

Lenovo Vantage reads the rated Wh value stored in the cell's EEPROM, and that figure is set against the cell's nominal chemistry rating at the factory. The 42.62Wh figure in the product data reflects actual measured capacity at the 11.52V nominal voltage. The small gap between EEPROM-reported Wh and measured Wh is normal across Li-Polymer cells — it does not indicate a capacity shortfall. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate cycle and check Vantage again; the reported figure often updates once the BMS has a real discharge log to reference.
