My VGN-U50 shows the new battery at 0% and won't read it at all — what's happening?

The fuel gauge IC on the U-series motherboard is still locked to calibration data from the old cell, so it cannot map the new cell's voltage curve. The BIOS flags this as an unrecognised or 0% state. Discharge the laptop fully to hibernate-cutoff with the new cell installed, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without removing AC power. System info shows the wrong Wh rating — it says 20Wh but the battery should be 23.31Wh. Is the battery faulty?

The Wh value displayed in Windows or the VAIO BIOS is pulled from the EEPROM on the battery's BMS chip, not measured live. The EEPROM on replacement cells is programmed with rated chemistry values that can differ slightly from the exact capacity of the installed cell. This is a data field difference, not a capacity fault. Actual delivered energy aligns with the 23.31Wh spec once the fuel gauge IC completes two calibration cycles.
