This 3.7V 1700mAh Li-Polymer battery replaces the OEM cell in the Ecom iPAQ 39a-Ex rugged handheld PDA. It fits the 39a-Ex directly using OEM part number 233488-001. Over time, Li-Polymer cells lose charge-holding capacity through normal cycling — this replacement restores full power to the device.

  • 39a-Ex platform fit: The 39a-Ex uses a 3.7V Li-Polymer cell with a BMS handshake tied to OEM part 233488-001. The connector pinout and voltage rail match the original, so the device firmware recognises the replacement without any error state.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the 39a-Ex platform. The BMS accepted full charge to 4.2V, held the low-voltage cutoff correctly, and reported charge state accurately to the OS throughout the test.

Why the 39a-Ex won't boot after a new battery is installed

A freshly shipped Li-Polymer cell typically arrives at storage charge — around 3.6V to 3.8V. The 39a-Ex boot sequence draws a short current spike that can trip the BMS if the cell voltage is below the device's minimum boot threshold. The unit appears dead but is not faulty. Charge the new battery for at least 30 minutes before attempting the first boot.

Battery life shorter than expected during active warehouse scanning

The 39a-Ex in active scanning use draws significantly more current than in standby — the barcode scanner LED and any active wireless radio (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth) together can triple the average current draw versus idle. A 1700mAh cell that looks adequate on paper will deplete faster than expected under continuous scan cycles. If runtime drops sharply, check whether the wireless radio is left on between scans, as disabling it when not actively syncing reduces draw noticeably. Monitor battery percentage after a standard shift to establish a real-world baseline.

The 39a-Ex stores active application state and unsaved data in SRAM, which runs directly off the main battery. The moment the old cell is disconnected, that memory loses power and the data is gone — there is no backup capacitor to bridge the gap. Always do a full ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center sync to your host PC before removing the battery. After the swap, restore from that sync and the device will return to its last backed-up state.

My 39a-Ex wireless sync keeps dropping or running slowly right after fitting the replacement battery — what's causing it?

The Wi-Fi radio in the 39a-Ex is voltage-sensitive and draws a high burst of current when maintaining an active connection. If the replacement cell is not at full charge, voltage sag under radio load can cause the connection to drop or throttle. Charge the battery fully to 4.2V before attempting any wireless sync. Once fully charged, run the sync again — the issue will not persist if the cell is healthy.

The 39a-Ex is reading the new battery as low charge almost immediately after a full charge — is the battery faulty?

This is usually a fuel gauge calibration issue, not a defective cell. The 39a-Ex gas gauge learns from charge and discharge history — after a battery swap, it has no history and can misread state-of-charge significantly. Run one complete charge-to-full, then use the device under normal load until the low-battery warning triggers, then charge again fully. After one or two of these full cycles, the gauge recalibrates and the readings stabilise.
