This 3.7V 2400mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Rover P4 handheld PDA. The P4 is a mid-2000s pocket PC used for scheduling, contact management, and document viewing. This battery restores full power to units still in daily service.
- Rover P4 platform fit: The P4 runs on a single-cell 3.7V Li-ion supply with a BMS handshake that monitors cell voltage and temperature. This replacement cell matches the connector pinout and voltage profile the P4's power management IC expects — no negotiation issues on startup.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the bench. The BMS held cutoff at the correct low-voltage threshold and the charge circuit accepted the cell without triggering fault flags on reconnection.
- Pre-swap sync requirement: Perform a full ActiveSync or data sync to the host computer before removing the battery. The P4 holds open application state and unsaved data in RAM powered directly by the main battery — cutting power without syncing first will wipe anything not written to flash.
Why the Rover P4 loses all data when the battery dies completely
The P4 stores active RAM contents — open files, app state, recent entries — using power from the main battery, not a separate backup cell. When voltage drops below the BMS cutoff, the RAM loses power and that data is gone instantly. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. The fix is to sync before the battery is fully depleted or before any swap. If the unit arrives with a dead battery, connect it to the charger before powering it on — a partial charge is enough to attempt a sync.
Rover P4 not booting after new battery installation
A freshly fitted cell may sit below the minimum voltage the P4's boot sequence requires, especially after storage. The device will appear dead — no screen, no response to the power button. Connect the P4 to its charger and leave it for at least 20–30 minutes before attempting a boot. Once the cell reaches approximately 3.5V, the power management IC will allow the boot sequence to proceed normally.

My Rover P4 wiped all my contacts and calendar after I swapped the battery — is the new cell faulty?
The cell is not at fault. The P4 holds contacts, calendar entries, and open app data in volatile RAM powered by the main battery. The moment that power is cut — even briefly — anything not written to flash storage is gone. Always run a full ActiveSync to a host PC before pulling the battery. To recover what's left, restore from your last sync backup.
The Rover P4 screen stays blank after fitting the replacement battery — nothing happens when I press the power button.
A new cell shipped in storage state can arrive below the voltage the P4's boot ROM requires to start the boot sequence. Connect the device to its charger before pressing power. Give it 20–30 minutes on charge — once the cell reaches around 3.5V, the power management IC allows the device to boot. If the screen stays blank past that point, hold the reset pin for 10 seconds while still on charge.
Wireless sync keeps dropping on the P4 since I fitted the new battery — it was fine before.
The P4's wireless radio is voltage-sensitive and draws a significant current spike during transmission. If the replacement cell is not yet fully charged, voltage sags under that load and the radio drops out. Charge the battery to 4.2V — a full charge — before running any wireless sync session. If drops continue on a full charge, check that the radio antenna contacts inside the housing are seated correctly after the battery swap.
