This is a 3.6V, 1700mAh lithium thionyl chloride cell that replaces the Fey PA-A3293 and PA-A3293.R001 backup battery in Mitsubishi PLC systems. It maintains SRAM program memory and the real-time clock when main power is removed. Without a functioning backup cell, a power interruption wipes the controller's stored program.

Why the Mitsubishi PLC loses program memory after a battery swap

Pull the cell with the PLC de-energised, even briefly, and the SRAM contents are gone. Reconnecting a fresh cell restores backup power but does not restore lost data. Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation
Mitsubishi PLCs latch the battery alarm flag in the special relay register — it does not reset automatically when the new cell is fitted. The controller sees a valid voltage but the fault flag stays set until cleared in software. Open the programming software, navigate to the special relay or diagnostic register for battery status, and force a reset of that flag. After clearing, cycle controller power to confirm the alarm does not reappear.

My new PA-A3293 cell is reading around 3.5V on a multimeter — is it faulty or depleted?
It is neither — Li-SOCl2 cells ship at a storage voltage that can sit slightly below the 3.6V nominal rating. Once installed and drawing the micro-amp float current from the PLC's backup rail, the cell stabilises at full rated voltage within a few hours. Check the voltage again after the controller has been powered on for half a day. If it has not risen to 3.6V by then, check the backup rail connection on the battery holder.
The battery alarm keeps coming back every few months even with new cells — what is causing that?
A warm enclosure is the likely cause. Li-SOCl2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C rise above 25°C, so a controller mounted near a heat source or in a sealed cabinet without ventilation will consume backup cells far faster than the rated shelf life suggests. Check the internal enclosure temperature with a thermometer during peak operating hours. If it is consistently above 40°C, add ventilation or relocate the controller — no cell chemistry will solve a thermal problem.
